2019 Fulfilment by Amazon storage fee changes

Note: Links to all 2019 selling fee changes are also available at 2019 Fulfilment by Amazon fee changes (Europe).

Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) storage fees across the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain will be adjusted to reflect the changing costs of inventory storage.

The Clothing, and Shoes and Bags fee change will take effect on April 1, 2019, and all other storage fee changes will take effect on August 1, 2019:

  • Monthly storage fee reduction for Clothing, and Shoes and Bags: We will reduce monthly storage fees by 40% for standard-size items in the Clothing, and Shoes and Bags categories, including accessories such as handbags.
  • Monthly storage fee reduction for oversize items: We will introduce a separate, lower monthly inventory storage fee for oversize items.
  • Discontinuation of long-term storage fee for inventory aged 181-365 days: We will no longer charge a long-term storage fee for inventory aged 181 to 365 days, and we will waive that fee for the February 15, 2019 assessment. The long-term storage fee for inventory aged more than 365 days will remain in effect.
  • Monthly long-term storage fee introduction: We will begin charging long-term storage fees monthly instead of semi-annually for inventory aged more than 365 days.
  • Minimum long-term storage fee introduction: We will introduce a minimum long-term storage fee of GBP 0.10/EUR 0.10 per unit, per month for inventory aged more than 365 days. The greater of the applicable long-term storage fee or the minimum long-term storage fee will be charged.

The changes above are also applicable to storage fees for Multi-Channel Fulfilment and FBA Small and Light (available in UK and DE).

In the tables below, fees for the United Kingdom are shown in GBP (£), and the remaining European marketplaces are shown in EUR (€).

Frequently Asked Questions

When do these changes take effect?

The changes to monthly inventory storage and long-term storage fees take effect on August 1, 2019. Accordingly, we are also waiving the long-term storage fee for items aged 181 to 365 days for the February 15, 2019 assessment.

What is the definition of an oversize item?

An item that has dimensions greater than 45 cm x 34 cm x 26 cm is defined as an oversize item.

What will happen to my inventory that is aged 181 to 365 days during the February 15, 2019 long-term storage fee assessment?

We are waiving the long-term storage fee for items aged 181 to 365 days for the February 15, 2019 assessment. The long-term storage fee for items aged more than 365 days will continue to apply at the current rates.

I have configured automated long-term storage removals for my inventory. Will my 181 to 365 day-old inventory still be removed or disposed of before the February 15, 2019 assessment?

Automated removal orders are only created for items that will be charged a long-term storage fee. As a result, your inventory aged 181 to 365 days will not be automatically removed prior to the February 15, 2019 assessment. Note that removal orders will still be created for inventory aged more than 365 days, and your settings will continue to apply during the changes that take place on August 1, 2019.

Which of my products will be charged the long-term storage fee, and how much will I be charged?

You can use the Inventory Age and Inventory Health reports (sign-in required) to identify which ASINs in your inventory are subject to the long-term storage fee. For each ASIN, you can view your inventory by the amount of time it has been in an Amazon fulfilment centre, including:

  • 0 to 90 days
  • 91 to 180 days
  • 181 to 270 days
  • 271 to 365 days
  • 365+ days

This information can help you estimate the number of items that will have been in our fulfilment centres for more than 365 days in advance of the next inventory cleanup date.

The Recommended Removals report can also help you identify items that are subject to a long-term storage fee. This report automatically calculates the number of items that you need to remove on an ASIN-by-ASIN basis (assuming no further sales) to avoid the long-term storage fee, and pre-populates a removal order request for those items.

You can find the Inventory Age page by clicking on Inventory Planning under the Inventory tab in your seller account. For the Inventory Health and Recommended Removal reports, click on Fulfilment under the Reports tab.

Do I need to do a daily review for inventory that will be charged the long-term storage fee?

No, but active management of aged inventory is encouraged, especially when your inventory will have been in our fulfilment centres for more than 365 days. If your inventory remains in our fulfilment centres for more than 365 days before being sold or removed (via a removal request), you will be assessed a long-term storage fee on the 15th of every month. You can use the Inventory Age and Inventory Health reports (sign-in required) to identify which ASINs in your inventory are subject to the long-term storage fee. All inventory is accounted for on a First In First Out (FIFO) basis.

What if I have some inventory that has been in Amazon fulfilment centres for more than 365 days and some for less than 365 days?

The items that have been in our fulfilment centres for 365 days or less will not be charged a long-term storage fee. Only those items that have been in our fulfilment centres for more than 365 days will be assessed the greater of the long-term storage fee or the minimum long-term storage fee.

FBA accounts for inventory on a First In, First Out (FIFO) basis across our entire fulfilment network. This means that, for the purpose of determining how long inventory has been in our fulfilment centres, we will account for the sale or removal of inventory by deducting it from the inventory that has been in our fulfilment network the longest, regardless of which physical item was actually delivered or removed.

Will I be charged both the minimum long-term storage fee and the long-term storage fee for a unit that has been in a fulfilment centre for more than 365 days?

No, a specific item will not be charged both a minimum long-term storage fee and long-term storage fee at the same time. If an item has been in our fulfilment centres for more than 365 days, you will be charged the greater of the applicable long-term storage fee (charged per cubic foot in the United Kingdom or per cubic metre in the remaining European marketplaces) and the minimum long-term storage fee (charged per unit).

Does my inventory need to be out of the fulfilment centre before the inventory cleanup date to avoid the long-term storage fee, or will submitting a removal request before the cleanup date be sufficient to avoid the fee?

Submitting the removal request before the clean-up date is sufficient to avoid the fee, even if the inventory has not physically been removed yet. Inventory in sellable condition will be available for sale until the removal is complete. You will not be charged for removed inventory until it has been returned to you or disposed of.

Is the long-term storage fee in lieu of the monthly inventory storage fee or in addition to it?

The long-term storage fee is in addition to the monthly inventory storage fee. The monthly inventory storage fee will continue to be charged each month.

Will this fee change affect Multi-Channel Fulfilment and FBA Small and Light?

Yes. All non-fulfilment fees for Multi-Channel Fulfilment and FBA Small and Light will continue to be the same as for regular FBA.

Is the Clothing, and Shoes and Bags storage fee reduction only applicable to inventory sent to a fulfilment centre after April 1, 2019, or do I get the reduction on my existing inventory as well?

The storage fee reduction applies to standard-size inventory in the Clothing, and Shoes and Bags categories that you have in our European fulfilment centres, starting from April 1, 2019.

Will the storage fee reduction be applied at time of billing or reimbursed later?

The storage fee reduction would be applied when you are billed for your monthly storage fees.

When will the storage fee reduction appear in my billing statement?

The storage fee reduction will apply to inventory stored in April, for which billing would take place the following month in May.

How is product volume measured when applying monthly storage fees?

The volume in cubic feet/cubic metres of any unit will be based on the unit’s size when properly packaged and ready for shipping to customers in accordance with the FBA programme policies. Amazon reserves the right to make its own measurement of the volume in cubic feet/cubic metres or the weight of packaged units or representative samples. In the event of any conflict between such measurement and information provided by the seller, Amazon’s measurement will govern.
