Subject to certain conditions, the South African Government requires non-resident companies providing ‘remote services’ to collect South African VAT at a rate of 15% on these services when provided to South African residents. In this context, Selling on Amazon fees are considered remote services. Hence, Amazon will charge all South Africa-based sellers a standard rate of 15% VAT on Selling on Amazon fees (listing/referral services) and subscription fees.

To learn more or understand how this may impact your Selling on Amazon account, please visit the South Africa Tax Office website.

How does South African VAT apply to my Selling account?

If you are a resident of South Africa, Selling on Amazon fees (listing/referral services) charged to your selling account are subject to South African VAT at a rate of 15%.

How can I include my South African VAT ID on my invoice?

Should you wish Amazon to include your South African VAT number on your invoices, you may provide your South African VAT ID on Seller Central.

To provide Amazon with your South African VAT ID:

  1. Log in to Seller Central
  2. Under Settings, choose Account Info
  3. In the section Tax Information, click on VAT information
  4. From the list of countries, select South Africa
  5. Add your VAT ID

How do I obtain a South African VAT ID?

You may be eligible to register for a South African VAT ID online by visiting your local tax office website. Consult your tax adviser if you have any questions regarding how to register for a South African VAT ID.

I am not a South African resident; will Amazon charge my account South African VAT on fees?

No. If you are not a resident of South Africa, Selling on Amazon fees through your selling account will not be subject to South African VAT collection. Consult your tax adviser to help you understand if you have any VAT obligations in South Africa.

I updated my information to reflect my current address, which is outside South Africa. Why is Amazon continuing to collect South African VAT?

Amazon calculates South African VAT on fees when an order is placed, and collects it when an order is shipped. If the information you provided at the time of shipment indicated you were a resident of South Africa, then South African VAT will have been collected. This might have occurred if there were pending orders before you updated your current address and payment information.

Go to Seller Account Information and review each section to ensure that all of your information is complete and accurate.

Note that there may be several addresses and payment methods associated with your seller account.

I am no longer a resident of South Africa, and I have updated all my information to reflect my current address. Can Amazon refund previously-charged South African VAT to my seller account?

Amazon is required to charge and remit South African VAT based on the information in your seller account. At the time the VAT was calculated and collected, Amazon had enough information to associate your account with South Africa and cannot refund the South African VAT charged.

How do I receive a refund for previously charged South African VAT on my seller account?

If you believe you were incorrectly charged, you may request a refund for previously-charged South African VAT.

    To request a refund:

    1. Contact Amazon Seller Support through the Contact us form.

    1. Choose Selling on Amazon
    2. Click on Other issues and then Tax Questions
    3. Under What are your tax questions, request a refund of the South African VAT charged to your seller account.

      2. You will receive an update for your case when your request has been processed. The update will provide the estimated date when you can expect to receive a refund in your seller account if your request was approved.

Will Amazon provide me with an invoice for any South African VAT collected on Selling on Amazon fees?

Amazon will provide a monthly tax invoice to sellers who are charged South African VAT on their Selling on Amazon fees. Your monthly invoice will be emailed to the primary email address that we have on file for your seller account.

You can also view your monthly invoices by going to Seller Central > Reports > Tax Document Library > Seller Fee Tax Invoices

You will also see VAT on your listing/referral fees in your Seller Central Selling account, under Order Details Page.
