GS1 UPC Question Regarding Brand

Hi Sellers

We currently own a large batch of UPC codes that we use our legal name as the brand name for.

For example. Our legal name is ABC company and registered as ABC company with GS1. When doing a UPC lookup with our bar-code, the bar-code shows registered to ABC company for the current products we offer for sale (which is the brand name we are using)

We are starting a new brand through Brand Registry, and want to continue using our UPC codes.

When adding a product on GS1, GS1 has a section for "Brand" So if our new brand is XYZ, and we enter XYZ into the brand section on GS1, will Amazon recognize the UPC correctly? Meaning our GS1 legal name is ABC, we enter the product "Brand" on GS1 as XYZ, will amazon see the UPC as ABC or XYZ? I do not want to run into issues trying to list XYZ with the UPC code and have Amazon deny it and say the brand needs to be ABC

According to GS1, you must register with your legal name (which we did) So it is not like we can create a new GS1 account as XYZ because that is not our registered business name.

I have contacted GS1 but their customer support is horrendous. I cannot get them to give a response

Thank you!

What exactly do you mean by "legal name" here? Is it your business name that does not match your brand name?

we have done this for a few UPC codes with no issue. However, like you alluded to, I too saw it as a potential problem. We did go ahead and purchase a new batch/prefix from GS1 correctly. We have two companies, each with their own brand. Company X with brand X, and company Y with brand Y. We used a few codes from company X for company Y before we got company Y it's own prefix. Company X actually has two brands it owns and I just change the brand category depending on which brand the new product falls under, like you're saying. OK for multiple brands under one company, little more sketchy doing that between different companies.

We used to use reseller acquired bar codes but recently enrolled to get a batch of our own GS1 GTIN's. We tried to use a barcode from our old list which always worked and it wouldn't go through...we used one of the new GS1 codes for that product and it did go through...so Amazon is definitely checking and now any codes we have that are not registered to us through GS1 will not work. I can't say for sure but what is most likely being checked is your GS1 company prefix and the brand.name. In the GS1 GTIN setup you are free to change the brand name for each item and we have done that with no problems getting them listed...even though the company name is different...like yours. Just to clarify also...all of our existing products are fine with their current barcodes...but new products have to have a UPC/GTIN from our GS1 account or they will not get listed. They may be checking your company name(probably as the manufacturer in GS1 item details), but more likely they are checking the company prefix and brand in GS1. Maybe Amazon mod can clarify this?
