Amazon recommending completely wrong clothing sizes and causing returns
Has anyone else suddenly started receiving clothing returns because Amazon is recommending customers order sizes that are far too large?
I have now had two separate customers within 24 hours explicitly blame Amazon’s size recommendation:
One customer normally wears Medium, but Amazon recommended she order 2XL. She followed the recommendation and returned it because it was huge.
Another customer was recommended XL and has returned it because it was much too big.
These were different child ASINs within the same T-shirt variation family. In both cases, I dispatched the exact size selected by the customer, so there was no seller fulfilment error. Amazon generated the recommendations and then automatically authorised the resulting returns.
I have also received another “Too large” return for a Medium from the same variation family, although that customer left no comment.
Has anyone found a way to disable Amazon’s size recommendations for an ASIN or variation family? Which listing attributes does the recommendation system use, and how do you get Amazon’s catalogue or Fashion fit team to investigate it?
This is now costing me outward postage, return costs and wasted production through no fault of my own. Amazon should not be recommending customers jump from Medium to 2XL and then leaving the seller to pay for the resulting return.

Hello @Seller_TufyJDtetbrlU,
Thank you for taking the time to post here. Based on what you've shared, it sounds like the size recommendation feature is generating inaccurate suggestions for your T-shirt variation family, which is leading to avoidable returns and added costs on your end.
I understand how concerning this must be, especially when the orders were fulfilled correctly and the returns are a direct result of the recommendations shown to customers.
Here are some steps you can take:
- Open a case with Seller Support by going to Help > Get Support > Selling on Amazon and selecting Product, Listing, or Inventory > Product Detail Page. In the case, include the specific ASINs affected, examples of the incorrect size recommendations customers received, and request that the size recommendation feature be reviewed or disabled for those listings.
- Review your listing attributes to ensure the size-related fields are accurately filled in for each child ASIN. Incorrect or missing size mapping data can sometimes cause the recommendation system to generate inaccurate suggestions. You can verify this through Manage All Inventory > Edit on each child listing.
- Re-upload your size guide images where possible. If your size chart images were previously suppressed, try re-adding them as secondary images. If you encounter errors when adding a size chart to specific ASINs, include that detail in your Seller Support case as well, since the team may be able to investigate the restriction.
- Regarding the adult vs. children's size confusion, double-check that the variation structure clearly separates adult and children's sizes, and that the department attribute is correctly set for each child ASIN. If customers are receiving children's sizes when they believe they ordered adult sizes, there may be a listing configuration issue worth flagging in your support case.
If you have any other questions, feel free to post here.
Regards,
Billy
