Received phone call supposedly from Amazon requesting bank account details
I had a call from someone claiming to be from Amazon. They asked for my mobile number so they could send an access code. I’m very reluctant to give out security information that could compromise our account and there was no way of telling if this person was actually from Amazon, especially given that my mobile number is already on the account.
I reluctantly gave out my mobile number and received a text with a link. I clicked the link and it took me to a page asking for my bank account details. The URL looked different and the logo font was also different. It just didn’t seem right to me at all especially as I had a fraudulent call from someone pretending to be from British Telecom a couple of hours earlier so I told the caller I wasn’t comfortable continuing with the process. They said they would now have to refer it to the other department to put the account in review which would take around 19 days to resolve if I didn’t give the bank account details. This made is seem even more like a scam.
I’ve now logged into Amazon and our account and it says our account status is pending validation.
If Amazon are genuinely looking to confirm bank account information then surely the best way to do this is from within the account itself rather than with a method that is very similar to scam calls going about?

That all sounds very suspicious. TBH seeing that you were not happy I am surprised that you gave the phone number and then clicked a link.
I hope that this is not a phishing scam, but it probably is.
Amazon doesn’t do things in this manner, so please do not enter your bank details on a site where you clicked a link.

It certainly sounds like a scam.
Hopefully, one of the mods will see your post and confirm it one way or the other.

seems like a scam i would check nothing been changed email telephone number bank details as if they got into your account with the mobile number and changed somthing this would trigger a automatic review

To me that has scam written all over it. As has been said. Go into your account and make sure NOTHING is changed. I would also suggest you change your password quick.

Thanks for the replies. I terminated the call before I entered any bank details. Not sure how anyone would be able to access our account with 2 step verification. There’s no way they could find out the access code texted to my phone is there?
It’s just very strange how our account went into review right after the call just like the caller said it would.
I’ve emailed Amazon so will let you all know the outcome. Stay vigilant folks!

Update: Not heard back from Amazon yet but our company name has been changed and a couple of other details so this would explain the review. I’m unable to change it back until Amazon have reviewed the change. I have changed the password in the mean time.
The other worrying thing was that the text with the link that I received was from the same number that asks for 2 step verification.

This is scam, i am surprised that people still fall for this trick. amazon would normally not ask you to provide your banking details on the phone. they will always send an email, telling you to go to storefront , no link.

Hi,
Thanks for your post.
I am not aware of any Amazon team phoning sellers to ask for their mobile numbers. In addition to this we would not send text messages with links to add banking information.
Any banking information needs to be submitted directly through your Amazon seller account. If you are required to add or confirm banking details the verification team will contact you through a performance notification in your seller account.
If you have not changed your account details please create a case immediately with Seller Support so that it can be sent to our Seller Performance team so they can check your account.
Thanks,
Jessica

Why would they need your bank details? If they are asking you to give them your bank account number, then it is 100% clear that the hackers already have a full access to your account and all they need now is to change your bank account information.
Whenever a seller wants to update the bank account number which will be used to receive disbursements, Amazon asks to input the previous bank account number in full.
Contact Amazon immediately, your account has been hacked.

Just don’t - if it unexpected then it is false
Amazon have your details so call them to check. If in doubt then never take any of these calls, emails or any other crap these scammers will try
We get 100’s of these calls and emails every month - some are very convincing - we ignore every single one.
If Amazon, ebay, paypal or any other of these guys need to get in touch with you they will do so via your account.
