The cost is minimal, after all these barcodes are dirt cheap to buy.
Many more sellers will soon realise that the dodgy codes they bought on ebay and other places will soon start to be pulled off the catalogue and their listings will become inactive. Then the losses will start mounting up.

Amazon can check the bar codes match the manufacturer or brand you are listing against if you are using generic bar codes for a branded product, that does not match, Amazon will block it at the ASIN creation stage. If the product is generic or your own brand you can use generic bar codes.

The product needs to be fully registered with GS1. You can check this using their lookup tool http://gepir.gs1.org/index.php/search-by-gtin

Seems to be hit and miss with ebay codes.
We’ve got several thousand bought about 6 years ago and haven’t had a single issue.
I dont foresee any of our listings being taken down.

The more people realise this the better. You can’t just have someone pick an EAN and start using it.
eBay sellers simply can not sell you EANs that will be accepted by others - they have no authority to license you these barcodes in a way that other parties will recognise. Can you imagine the chaos if any old eBay user could assign EANs to anyone? Two users get given the same EAN by two different sellers, who is right?
At best they’re selling you a unique block of codes, sublet if you will, from their own registration. No trading partner will recognise these as YOUR EANs because that’s not what the databases will reflect. At worst they’re just taking your money and falsely telling people they can use EANs wich are likely licensed to other people or sold multiple times to different buyers.
There’s a reason we use GS1. Trade would seriously suck without a recognised authority here. The license fees are perfectly reasonable, about £10 per month for small sellers.
We’ve requested hundreds of listings be taken down because sellers are using EANs licensed to our company. A quick search of the recognised trade databases confirms this and listings are quickly removed. No doubt repeat offenders get extra attention from amazon for the inconvenience they cause to amazon, other sellers and indeed buyers.

We have always used codes direct from GS1. The codes are very cheap on Ebay but I don’t see the point in risking it for the sake of £119 a year for 1000 barcodes direct from GS1. This is a recurring licence of course but anyone reading this please first think about the headache of what would happen if listings were supressed or selling privileges removed because Amazon suddenly decide to reject your EANs.

I’ve said it before… GS1 are missing a trick by not offering a small amount of codes for a low, low price.
i.e £25 gets you 100 codes for a year.
That said, if you run a serious business and aren’t prepared to pay £140 per year to stay legitimate, then you deserve everything that follows.
And before anyone comes back and says their codes are legitimate, or that they predate the creation of GS1, that’s just BS and misses the whole point of having codes in the first place.
The point of the codes is that they are used to track the owners/manufacturers of products, not simply to give each product a unique identifier. If you bought codes that are registered to some other company, and use them on your products, then straight away you are using the system against the way things are supposed to work.

Don’t buy off ebay, I bought loads years ago and at the time it was great but then the seller re-sold them to other buyers and thousands of my listings were being hijacked, nothing I can do about it as didnt have proof of ownership, just get a batch amount from GS1, get 100,000 barcodes and it will cost you around £600/year.
I personally purchased 200,000 barcodes for around 800/year
