Brand approval for secondhand books (single copies)

I am listing some secondhand books for sale, as I have done in the past. However, there are several which I am now unable to list as Amazon now needs me to request seller approval for the brands in question (the publishers of the books).

In each case, I am only selling a single copy and it is one that I bought some time ago for my personal use. I no longer have the receipt(s) but in any case, this would only be for a single copy and not list my address etc. As a result, I am unable to provide the documentation requested.

The publishers include Sage, Routledge, MIT Press and I.B. Tauris. Is there a solution to this issue? Currently, these branding restrictions make it impossible for an individual to sell their own books online through Amazon.

A lot of times the approval is either granted straight away or after answering some questions. Where they do require a supply chain invoice the solution is to sell it elsewhere.

A common problem nowadays with secondhand books (as I too am a seller of books, and only ever have 1 of each) - usually specific to certain publishers. As ForumLurker says, if they don't give you approval, you need to sell elsewhere.

Hi Andy98_Books,

You're right. Some of us have been complaining about this for years!

Second-hand books should not be treated with the same restrictionsw as New Books!

All Best

A recurring problem, stemming from Amazon's 'one-size-fits-all' approach, which doesn't take into account the laws applying to second-hand items. I've had listings for 1930s Penguin rejected: "You may not create new ASINs for the brand Penguin". Same with trying to get something corrected. I wanted to get one of those 'SOS-TITLE UNKNOWN' corrected - apparently I need an invoiced from the last 6 months showing purchase of 10 units. Insanity. And while on the rant ... A SS bot insisted that ASINs for books MUST start 'BO......', even though we are required to use ISBNs if they are available. Just comfort yourself with the thought that when you sell the book elsewhere Amazon won't get their commission.
