Art mugs - Handmade or not?

Hi I’m using a UK based drop shipper to print some of my artwork on to mugs. Would these fit for handmade at Amazon?

Thanks for your advice

Maybe if you were doing the printing, but not if you are using a drop shipper so that you don’t even view the product let alone “Hand make” it.

How on earth can you possibly consider yourself a maker of Handmade goods with this scenario? Gee…

So I contact Amazon and their official word is YES I can use the printer/dropshipper because the original design is my own artwork. Thanks for all the amazing advice!

OK thanks for everyone’s advice, I will take it on board, sounds like you’re all in agreement that it’s against the rules. It was just a thought, an idea. I didn’t mean to cause so much offence!

So I’ve just searched ‘mug’ under the Handmade section and most the mugs are printed (by machines) using heat sublimation by commercial printers, so are all of them violating the rules?? I’m genuinely interested!

Dear Artisans,

Thank you all for your contributions to this forum.

As per Amazon Handmade policy, all original artwork is allowed to be outsourced to be printed. We do hope that these will be in small batch numbers and not mass produced, however we have little control over the quantity ordered by you the Artisans, and only hope that, you the Artisans, want to have a certain control over their own images and original artwork.

Amazon is here to help artists, artisans and small producers reach a world wide marketplace, where they can make money, whilst still remaining small and local. The approvals team work hard to make sure that it is artists and small crafts people who sell on Handmade, and we hope that you are all happy that your goods, that are produced with love and no small effort, are given such a diverse and large audience.

We do ask that on the forum, Sellers work together to find solutions, and to reach out to each other and that it is a respectful place where members can help each other.

Everyone has a different idea of what exactly Handmade should be and to quote our own Handmade Policy :

All products listed as handmade must adhere to Amazon selling policies, including the following listing policy:

A: Who makes it:
Products must be handmade by yourself, one of no more than 20 employees (including sub-contractors that have less than 20 employees), or a member of your collective or cooperative with fewer than 100 people. Selling mass-produced products or reselling products handmade by another artisan is not permitted in the handmade category.

B. How it’s made:
We define Handmade as products that are:

  • Made entirely by hand (for example, knitted blanket, hand-carved wooden bowl, hand-shaped pottery)

  • Hand altered (for example, tea towels which have been screen-printed by hand, hand-painted ornaments)

  • Hand assembled, not from a kit (for example, shelves built by hand from reclaimed wood, beaded jewellery)

  • Individual items hand produced in volume by a village, cooperative or collective with fewer than 100 people (for example, villagers in Uganda making necklaces by hand where each necklace has a slight variation)

Handmade products can be pre-made or made to order, and the use of light machinery that is not automated is permitted (for example, a sewing machine, electric sander or welder). However, the products should not be:

  • Mass-produced (for example, thousands of the same item produced in a large factory-like setting, even if handmade)
  • Supplies or raw materials (for example, loose gemstones or beads) to produce handmade products
  • Produced or assembled entirely by a machine (for example, 3D printed or injection moulded)
  • Assembled from a kit (for example, pre-made bookshelf kit that you assemble to sell)
  • Products for which the entire printing process is outsourced for production, unless it is photography or artwork that is too large to print in-house
  • Non-altered vintage products
We hope this helps you going forward, and please, if ever in doubt, contact us directly on Seller Support.

Thank you
