best thing to do is take a look at other sellers of coal on Amazon uk and see what they do.
Had a look and most of the top sellers look to ship themselves through seller fulfilled prime. And the good reason for that is likely to be the fact coal is heavy and bulky, so the FBA costs will be high vs any costs of you fulfilling yourself.
I would also say coal is possibly something people might buy more than 1 bag of at a time. If you self fulfill, you get the benefits of one shipping cost, whereas with FBA, you will pay an FBA fee for each item in an order.

.....selling on Amazon but i know pretty much nothing
As new to Amazon, have a read of Amazon's 'Seller University' -type it into blue search box at top of page - everything you need to know is there with lots of instructional videos.
My gut feeling is to do FBM (sell yourself) initially, and before doing FBA make sure you fully understand all the associated fees - which can quickly mount up.

In addition to the items mentioned above and in conjunction with seeing what other sellers do have a look for the specific brand that your looking to sell and check out the prices. Unlike other ecommerce platforms on Amazon you will al be selling on the same advert and possibly be competing against large suppliers who will be undercutting you on cost and postage prices (economies of scale). FBM (fullfilled by merchant) as suggested is the better option and you would have to have the stock in hand do you have a warehouse to store the coal in??
