What would be illegal about it? Its possible that seller is outside the UK and that is their shipping costs.

While it might flag to amazon that the shipping is possibly high, I dont' think there is anything illegal.

Some sellers I have noticed charges large shipping fees and offer a low product cost. Whether it is right or wrong, it seems Amazon allow this to happen.

Sellers can charge what they like if they are on a proffesional plan.

I would suggest to not buy from sellers that offer crazy postage prices that you know cost a lot less than they are charging.

This used to be a popular "strategy" when minimum order quantities were a thing. Lure customers in with a really low featured offer price and free shipping. Set a minimum order quantity of 2 and as soon as the buyers adds the 2 one a really high shipping price would appear.

Amazon does monitor shipping prices as part of their fair pricing policy (excerpt below):

"Pricing practices that harm customer trust include, but are not limited to:

setting a shipping fee on a product that is excessive. Amazon considers current public carrier rates, reasonable handling charges, as well as buyer perception when determining whether a shipping price violated our fair pricing policy."

illegal - no.. its the customer's choice if they go through with the order

Amazon does suspend shipping templates that they feel have really high shipping prices, I've had it before where I've failed to put the point between pounds and pence

Its no more than the latest trick. It lets them seriously reduce amazons guide price, resulting in other sellers having their offers deactivated under the unfair pricing policy. Of course, amazon will allow it.
