Where have the book sales gone?

Nearly three weeks now with zero sales. Do not understand it, usual responses like "you dont have the right books" etc do not address the issue. Worried and disappointed with what is happening with amazon. Keep on lising new titles to no avail.

Hi Smone,

It's now hard to find specific titles/editions in the condition you want, with any reliability.

And the bulk book merchants have flooded the internet with multiple listings from apparently different companies with total prices that are often below standard postage costs...

I'm hoping that's because they're desparate for any income and their business model may fold - but they may take buyers, fed up with the 'fun-and-games' with them...

Much sympathy and all best wishes

Brian

My book sales on Amazon are dire too - currently 8 in the last month.

I remember the days when I was getting 3 a day and often 10-12 at the weekend. I believe it is the poor search and the flooding of the catalogue with rogue duplicates of items already there.

I have been culling a lot of mine as needing to downsize, and the number of books when checking them by title and author are not even visible, or even though listed correctly at the time, have ended up on the wrong catalogue page - presumably due to wrong merges. Some I discovered were not even in my inventory, although I know I had listed them.

It is disheartening

Then why keep flogging the dead horse that is Amazon and moaning about it?

It's been apparent for years Amazon's on the downslide for used books.

Write your own unique book or guide... i know a few people who have who reach up to 2k sales a day.

August has always been our slowest month for books, but I've also noticed this year seems particularly quiet. Our inventory has grown by maybe 20% in this time but sales volume has fallen slightly. Our merchant fulfilled operation now has almost 60,000 books but is only selling 80 a day despite being the joint cheapest price on perhaps half of them and having faster advertised delivery times than the mega sellers. I wish there was an easy way of cross-listing to try other marketplaces to at least get a few more sales, perhaps an easy way of listing on Amazon USA to get sales from there.

I have been very quiet on everything the last few weeks, but I think it's a combination of interest rate rises again and the busiest weeks of the year for holidays. Whilst my sales have been the quietest ever my A-Z's have been at the highest ever, as I think more and more people see scamming on Amazon as a nice little safe sideline and a way to beat the cost of living crisis.

Books sales are seasonal, there are books for every season.

What kind of books do you sell, usually? Fiction, non fiction, cooking, paperbacks? Any author in particular?

Have you compared your listings to the bestsellers and the big sellers?

In my opinion, it pays to specialise, for small book sellers, to cultivate your niches.

I have been finding that my ebay book sales are beating amazon even though i have 4-fold more on amazon, (same books listed on both)

Same here. One sale this week, first for 3 weeks. Dire. Luckily I'm only selling my own stuff and just as a hobby so not reliant on sales. Ebay is this same listed 20 books last week and not even 1 view on any of them

Amazon have made it increasing difficult to find second hand books on the site - even allowing for the chaos and confusion of the catalogue, if you don't know where in the small print to look for "used" you're much more likely to buy the new Amazon copy. That said this summer has been poor on the proper book sites too.
