What determines which product reviews show up at the top of the review list?
I recently received a 1-star review. The reviewer basically wrote a 3-paragraph essay claiming that every aspect of my product is terrible. It’s a really scathing review full of lies, and the reviewer is almost certainly a competitor. Sadly, I can’t get it removed as it doesn’t technically break any review guidelines because I can’t definitively link it to a particular competitor.
Unfortunately, that review seems to be sticking to the top of the review list. It’s the first one people see when they scroll down to look at my reviews. I’ve since received more 5 star reviews but they show further down the list even though they are more recent. I will note that the 1-star review does not have any ‘helpful’ votes (none of my reviews do)
So I’m wondering what determines which reviews show near the top and which show up further down the list. I’d like to get this review off the top because it’s definitely hurting my conversion even though my overall star rating is still very good. It’s a very frustrating situation.

Most likely a “helpfulness score” determined by Amazon that combines things like ‘helpful’ votes, length, photos, contains words deemed helpful on other reviews, avoids words deemed unhelpful on other reviews etc.

Interesting update… I just took another look at my listing using a couple different browsers + mobile also cleared cache etc.
The 1 star review is no longer sitting at the top! It’s now only visible if you click the “see all reviews” button…
Let’s hope it stays that way!

as a buyer and looking at reviews, I look at the overall star rating first over several different but similar items. Then I start to look at the negatives ones with the overall better star reviews.
You can normally get a good idea of a product by actually reading the poor reviews. If 100 people out of 500 are all saying the same, it breaks in a certain place for instance, take heed.
You will always get poor reviews no matter what! take it a feedback and look to see if ANY of the points are valid? also look to see if that person is in the habit of doing nothing but leaving poor reviews for everything…
