Selling Food Supplements in the US from the UK

Hi Everyone,

Looking to expand my food supplements/dietary supplements from amazon UK to amazon.com

Apart from correct listing, images and COA testing /compliance of the actual products does anyone know what is required when you list a product in the US? I know it’s not as tightly regulated as the UK and EU, but some people online have mentioned FDA approval beforehand or getting registered but I was under the impression not for food supplements / 100% natural vitamins?

Anyone help would be very much appreciated

You would certainly need to do some research to check on the FDA approval, as I know that they are very hot on this, and as you have to declare the HS code for products you are exporting, they will instantly know what you have sent when it gets to customs.

You will also need to check if your insurance covers you to trade in the US, they are very hot in the US at making claims, and a general insurance policy does not cover this unless you have specifically added the US as a trading location.

I may be missing something, but surely you will be up against huge market competition, with the US being so large, and surely have many ‘home-grown’ manufacturers of food supplements ?
I’m thinking yours would have to be extremely unique in some way to sell ??

Thank you Winston for the links - I have tried speaking to SS in the US but couldn’t get any clear answers just copy and pasted info which isn’t relevant!

JillyB1 - yes saturated market, but the yanks love a UK made product and you have so many more customers to go after, market is huge. As long as you got a point of difference and product stands out its worth a shot. Will I get there - who knows it’s seems a very long and tedious process!

Hey @ISLUK,

I really have to agree with @Langley_Projects and @PeterB on this.
I will also attach some links that you may find useful, Food Supplements, now, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) brochure on food supplements: has been archived but you can still access it.
Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Winston
