Hi everyone,
Has anyone else noticed unusual Best Seller Rank movements in the USB Cables category on Amazon UK?
The Best Sellers page currently appears to be heavily dominated by Amazon Basics products and other products bought and sold directly by Amazon. Some of the rankings do not seem consistent with the recent-sales information shown on the product pages.
One example is the Amazon Basics USB-A to USB-B printer cable. It is currently appearing at approximately #13 in USB Cables.
The listing shows:
- ASIN/variation: Amazon Basics USB-A to USB-B printer cable
- More than 136,000 ratings
- “100+ bought in past month”
- Sold by Amazon
- Approximately #13 on the USB Cables Best Sellers page
I sell the same type of USB printer cable for a lower price. Based on my actual Seller Central order data, my product has sold considerably more units during the past month, but my BSR is nowhere near #13.
There are also other established competitors selling thousands of units that are not ranking as highly as this Amazon Basics product.
I understand that “100+ bought” is only a rounded estimate and may not show exact unit sales. I also understand that historical sales contribute to BSR, with recent sales normally carrying more weight. However, this listing did not previously appear anywhere near this position, which makes the sudden change difficult to explain.
There may also be a variation issue. The Amazon Basics listing contains several cable lengths, and the Best Sellers page may be displaying one child variation while using the ranking of another child or the wider variation family.
A second example is:
ASIN: B0G1TLY9N1
This is a Juice USB-A to USB-C cable sold by Amazon. At the time of checking, it had:
- Only eight customer ratings
- No meaningful “bought in past month” figure displayed
- Best Seller Rank of approximately #32 in USB Cables
A low review count does not necessarily mean low sales, but the ranking still seems unusually high for a relatively new or low-volume listing.
The USB Cables Best Sellers page also currently contains products such as HDMI cables, chargers and adapters, which suggests that there may be a browse-node or category-classification issue.
I checked in a private/incognito browser, so this does not appear to be caused solely by my Amazon account or browsing history.
Could this be caused by:
- A temporary BSR calculation or caching error?
- Recent changes to the USB Cables browse node?
- Parent and child variation sales being combined incorrectly?
- Historical sales being given significantly more weight than before?
- Different rank data being shown on the Best Sellers page and the product detail page?
- Amazon retail listings being treated differently from third-party seller listings?
I am not claiming that Amazon is deliberately manipulating BSR, but the current results do not appear to reflect the relative recent sales volumes visible to sellers.
It would be helpful if an Amazon moderator could ask the relevant catalogue or sales-rank team to investigate the USB Cables browse node and confirm whether there has been a recent ranking or classification change.
Has anyone else noticed similar movements in this category or other categories?
I have screenshots showing the Best Sellers page, the Amazon Basics listing and the BSR displayed for ASIN B0G1TLY9N1.
