You are referring to SIOC (ship in own container) which is part of the FFP programme. The Frustration Free Packaging programme has been around for 10yrs and more and more products, such as yours, fall into the qualifying tiers.

This drives me mad. I get load sent out like this. The customers is upset as the item arrives damaged or seen by the child.
They return it and it gets marked as customer damaged.
I am left with an FBA fee, a damaged item and removal fees.
this is crazy, how many items are going to landfill due to this, not at all green
As a buyer it used to give you a choice at checkout and warn you that the item is shipped in its own packaging and give you the option for an outer box, not bought anything like that for a while so not sure if it still does
I had this problem yesterday when my wife was given her unwrapped Christmas present by the delivery driver
Spoiling the surprise aside, the products packaging was also scuffed and dirty from the delivery process.
Wrapping items in plastic mailers seems like a good idea.
Does anybody know how to turn this off if possible? We’ve just had our first review on a new gift item complaining that it didn’t come in the pictured gift box. Can understand the environmental thinking behind it but doesn’t work for every product!
I am finding with more experience of using FBA that it is better to pre-pack items in either a plain box, grey mailing bag or black pallet wrapping (depending on the item). Doing this means that the Amazon barcode is easily readable and the actual product is hidden regardless of how Amazon pack it. In addition to this we usually seal up the item with fragile tape regardless of if it is or not.
I have spoken to Amazon many times regarding this extra packing we have to do as it kind of defeats the whole FBA ideal. Needless to say I got absolutely no help from SS at all. I would rather spend a little more time at my end than have bigger issues with returned stock and extra fees without a little bit of attention detail at source. Amazon get enough dosh out of me without charging me more for returns and damages.
Yes, this is so frustrating. We received several refund requests for a particular item (a beauty product, foundation, with a complimentary sponge). The majority of buyers didn’t tell us why they returned the products, apart from one. This is what she literally said:
“This item was not in a box or envelope. I received it with labels stuck all over it and it was a bit squashed. I now cannot use it as it was for someone else. Not happy, I now need to return it.”
We had no choice but to destroy it, as we didn’t want to fork the bill for delivery to us. They were sent in boxed for FBA.
Amazon is conducting an investigation.
We had an identical issue with a pre-school kids toy. Amazon had the cheek to identify the return as “Customer Damaged” when the customers feedback clearly stated the issue was with the postage label Amazon had stuck on the outside of the box!
Apparently, it was the customers fault as they didn’t select “This Item is a Gift” on check out…
it took months to resolve and they finally, and very quietly, re-imbursed us. We have not encountered the issue again with this SKU so some internal adjustment has been made by Amazon.
@SheHair_Uk_Ltd This has been going on for over 10 years (FBA)… especially with large bulky items. You pay the FBA fee - but the goods are not even sent in a shipping box.
“Tip of the Day” to overcome this @SheHair_Uk_Ltd - Send this stock into FBA in a clear polybag - then amzn won’t stick a shipping label over the clear polybag - they will be forced to pack in a shipping box or heavy duty paper bag (which is also quite common these days) or other similar
