Bizarre customer query
Sold a used Tomtom sat nav back in June, it went missing in the post but a replacement was sent a week later. Now just received this bizarre email via Amazon:
I ordered a replacement TomTom because my one was stolen while it was in the local garage in Medoc, France waiting to be repaired. It is a small one-man band and the owner did not lock our car in the three weeks it was left there while being repaired
We returned to find our TomTom missing. The owner was very upset too, someone had been on his property and taken this item. I reordered a similar TomTom because I liked it and it worked very well. I have a UK account, although I live full time in France now. The TomTom was ordered : xxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxx on 7th June paid for 145.62 euros. The first did not arrive… the seller said there was a problem with the carrier. The replacement arrived a week later. It was sent to my son’s address. He brought this item over this week, since he is spending a week on holiday with us. My husband plugged in the TomTom, only to find it had all the previous addresses and effectively, was the one that we had stolen. It even listed our address when we pressed the ‘home’ button
I have not contacted the seller
It is quite bizarre that I have ended up with the very same product that was stolen, since we live in a small rural community in the Medoc. The item did come with packaging which I did not keep. I therefore do not know if it was the right packaging, but it is and was sold as second hand and in good condition. Had the contents of the TomTom been wiped clean, I would have been none the wiser. As it turns out, it has to be the one stolen since it has all my addresses listed
My main concern is theft and items not being resold via Amazon in this way. Does this distributor do this a lot? Where do they obtain their items from? It appears that the reseller was LCD & Plasma Service GmbH, based Im Nordfeld 21, Nienhagen 29336 DE
Ok, she references the correct order number for the actual purchase from me, however, I have absolutely no idea who on earth LCD & Plasma Service GmbH are, they have absolutely nothing to do with me! As for the implication - if I am reading this correctly - that I sold her her own stolen Tomtom then wow, what are the chances of that - 1 in a few billion or more??
How do I respond to this customer!?

It sounds like a stock email they are sending to a number of sellers they have purchased from and in your case, they forgot to change the seller name.
I would say that the chance of a tomtom being stolen, sold to a 3rd party, sold to you and then resold to the original owner are smaller than winning Euro Millions.
If genuine, could it be that they restored a previous backup which put back all information stored on the original unit?
TomTom are likely to know whether the serial number of the original and replacement match, if the owner used TomTom Home software.

Maybe the son nicked the first one and instead of bringing the ‘new’ one forgot and brought the one he’d previously nicked. Just a thought…

It just doesn’t add up, the story is just too convoluted - almost as though they are trying to make lots of personal comments to appear more genuine, plus the comment ‘I have not contacted the seller’ ??
Agree with last poster, start off simple by telling them that you are not the seller they have mentioned and hey should be contacting them.

It makes me surprised how far are some people willing to go when making up stories trying to obtain a refund.

I’ve not long been back from Denmark and they told be Hans Christian Andersen was long since departed. I think he’s alive and well and writing stories for Amazon buyers to try and get monies refunded

Well debate your point then, don’t go running to teacher to “tell” on others. Just because you disagree with a point of view doesn’t make it wrong. Stand up for your own position. Others may disagree with you but they’ll respect you.

I personally would respond like this
"Good afternoon insert name,
Thanks for your message, and I’m really concerned to hear that you think you’ve received the exact same unit that was stolen from you only a matter of weeks before you purchased the additional unit.
I need some information from you regarding this so I can perform some investigations and look into this. As this is a matter of being accused of handling stolen property, I hope you will understand that I need to collect some information from you in order to correctly resolve this issue.
I need to know the initial serial number of the TomTom that you had stolen from the garage, plus any proof of purchase for the initial purchase and any other proof of ownership that you previously had regarding this item (photographs, etc).
I also need to know whether the device we sent you has been plugged in or updated in any way since you purchased the item from us. Can you also please confirm the full name of the garage where the TomTom was stolen from?
I also need you to clarify where you sourced the seller name "LCD & Plasma Service GmbH " from as this is not us and from doing my own research I can see that they too sell this item?
Kind regards,
In terms of the unit that went ‘missing’ in the post - I would also be tempted to put something along these lines…
“In order for us to claim against the value of the satnav that went missing in the post, I need you to complete a disclaimer stating that it was not received by you. This disclaimer will be used by the carrier to perform their own investigations”…
We use that quite often because we unfortunately get a lot of items that get signed for and then customer claims they never received it… We send probably 4 or 5 disclaimer forms a week and probably only ever get 1 back a fortnight…
There’s something very odd about this.

@Chris2
I’ve had TomToms for years. When you get your first one, you create an account. When you get a new TomTom satnav you have to put in your e-mail address etc.
(I got a new one last year after I dropped my old one and broke it). I had regularly logged in to my account for map updates that you couldn’t get via WiFi back then. You had to connect it via USB.
I was delighted that it had knew all my places and favourites. My new one gets it data by Wifi or tethering to my phone.
Maybe this is what has happened to your customer.
