How to respond to A-z claim

Back in April, I sold 2 used cameras (same model) to a buyer. they were going to an address in London that had several businesses situated there. Given the value, I had ensured they were sent next day special delivery. A few days later, the cameras were returned undelivered, with ‘addressee unknown’ written on it. When I asked the buyer why this had come back, he told me to just re-send it to the same address, but without the name of the business that was showing on the order.

However, when I got to the Post Office, they said they couldn’t send it like that, as it was just his name and there were too many businesses located at the same address - it had to have a business name too. I decided at this point I had to urgently ring the buyer up to clarify, and did so whilst I was in the post office. He apologised and gave me a new address to send to which I then did. This was shown as delivered shortly thereafter.

Ok, only a few times between the end of April when I posted and a week ago (so during next 2 months) has he bothered to query where the cameras were. Both times I have politely told him they have duly arrived at the address given, sent him the tracking etc and heard nothing more.

So today he files an A-z stating non-delivery of the cameras. I realise, in hindsight, that I perhaps shouldn’t have sent them to an alternative address. Obviously this was a very frustrating occasion, holding up a big queue at the post office, already having lost one lot of postage sending to him, and had no reason at that point to think it would end up like this.

How do I respond now to the a-z? For example, when filling out the date of posting and tracking number, do I put the original tracking in (which will show it was returned) or just the new tracking (showing delivered, but to a different address)? Or do I explain the story and send both tracking number? Has anyone had a similar claim where item was asked to be sent elsewhere and then was claimed for, and what happened? Very worried now as this was an expensive order. Given his lack of concern over 2+ months I can’t but help feel this is a scam. Thanks for any advice.

If you didn’t send to the address on the order, I’m sorry to say there is realistically nothing you can do via Amazon. That money is gone. Or if you’re really lucky, they might fund the claim with their money but why should they for your shortsighted decision.

The only alternative is the Small Claims Court.

Good luck.

Dropped a clanger there I’m afraid - as stated if you sent to a different address than that on the order (which you did) then Amazon won’t back you and will refund his money from your account. They never pay from their funds if sending to a different address.

As Rugy says- Small Claims Court only hope

Argh, I’m really sorry but they are gone. You have no defence at all if you ship an order to an address other that the one Amazon have on the order.

You might try investigating the delivery address (google street view) but dollars to donuts it will be a 2 up 2 down unoccupied terraced house on an estate somewhere. Scammers employ junkies to sit in deck chairs at the front of the houses to sign for scammed goods which then get passed to fences.

In the event that is has been delivered to a genuine person at a genuine address you could try sending a letter or look at debt collection.

I feel really bad for you and these are very hard lessons to learn.

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand how you could make such a silly mistake when you have been selling here for years. Shipping a high value order to a different address than provided in the order details is crazy.

You can still try your luck, maybe the incompetent people dealing with the claims won’t notice the different address. But even if they won’t notice the different address, the tracking will still show, that you shipped the order weeks past the Expected Dispatch Date. This is a guaranteed loss.

I would advise you to send the buyer a Letter Before Action (once you lose the claim) and ask them to return you the goods or pay you the money back. I believe that in the UK, you can have disputes like this resolved on the Small Claims Court.

Unfortunately you’ve been turned over. The whole scam started with the business address, plucked from the phone book. They have no connection with it whatsoever and designed to generate buyer legitimacy to get your guard down

The new address is a form of scammers ‘ safe house’ which they cannot be traced through.

An estate agent employee near us went to jail for a similar scam.

Some are saying this is part of a scam but I can’t quite see it.

If the original order was returned to you by RM it seems to me that the buyer was taking a big risk in assuming you’d follow up on his offer of an alternative address.

I would guess it’s more a casual/careless buyer who doesn’t understand how Amazon works…though I could be wrong.

Either way, you should fight it.

Hello Chris , So sorry to hear that you are in this situation , Once I was too … But I do not understand if Amazon does not allow seller to send in a different address than

Why there is option for Buyer to change of address after placed an order . I did received email last week - Buyer like to change address , So I can not cancel the order because it will affect my matrix , and buyer email me not to send in the address provided . I do not have any other option . I did send to new address .

I did open a case , reply amazon rules .[ Not allow to send new address ] but can not cancel the order until received cancellation request . otherwise it will effect our matrix . Buyer do not want to send cancellation request .

Anyway that is way it is goes … Hope that you will have a fair outcome . Wish you Good luck.

If you sent the item via Special Delivery and signature on delivery, then provide the tracking for the delivery with signature. if the item was signed for, present this to the A-Z team. This might help your case .Avoid communicating with buyers by phone, always communicate via emails for the record. Amazon can verify email communications between buyers/sellers.

least you can do is, explain the full story and send screenshot your mobile screen for call duration, customer number you dialled (if possible) along with your appeal. Provide both track details. Amazon may pay the claim and end this case.
