New online tax suggested today

Mr Sunak is considering a new on line tax.

We have one already called Amazon fees.

Do you think if this happens Amazon will cut their fees so that our business is still viable?

No. We’ll all just shut up shop. Though in reality I believe this is for businesses with a turnover of a certain amount and one that will probably not affect small sellers like me.

Amazon fees aren’t taxes!

Though this will affect me, I think this is a good idea. At the moment shops in the brick and mortar world are far more heavily taxed than online retail, (through business rates) so there is an extremely unlevel playing field. As business rates are going to raise a lot less revenue it is reasonable for Governments to consider alternatives. As the various proposals are around transaction taxes in the long run it will be the customer who pays.

I get they need to claw back money but they should be looking at the people scrounging of the benefit system and the other schemes people are taking advantage for, I totally feel for the high street shops but dont agree they should be putting online tax in place.
I also read that they are considering a minimum delivery charge so lets be right ours costs will go up as couriers will increase with that to.

The pandemic has done online sales wonders but now its coming back to bite

Treasury is not going to make a decision until Spring 2021 so I am not going to worry it about it right now.

I personally don’t agree with this proposal, if anything this would hit the consumer spending through higher prices. As I would imagine most would raise prices to offset the extra charge. Although no point thinking about this too much yet.

not a good idea as it stands

if he does this, he should be focusing on the independent retail stores and not the retail chains

Retail chains always get bigger margins from all manufacturers / suppliers on the argument they have higher costs to cover etc…

Bricks and Mortar Shops are our advertising

(I am Online Only but use to have several shops)

The thing is , even Online Sellers Only need Bricks and Mortar Shops , as they actually generate sales for online business , especially with new product launch etc

Consumers need to be able to Touch Feel and Smell the products they buy

and you will find a large proportion of online sales , is not the first time a consumer has purchased that product or if it is they have seen it elsewhere and have had tried to find it cheaper online or just decided to buy

We need to help them

Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!..

There’s more chance of a pig flying past your window.

If an online tax comes, Amazon will make sure it gets passed on to us, and if they become liable they will just increase our fees to cover it.

The way the government have gone about the whole thing it’s obvious that it’s been engineered to crush small businesses and let the big corporations take over.

Amazon won’t help us, they’ll just go along with it.

No, Amazon fees are the relatively small fee you pay Amazon to provide you with millions of potential customers. Yes they’re eye watering at times but then again - you provide the same footfall / eyes-on for the same value.

BTW Tax is tax and goes to the government and not Mr Bezos.

The prices will no doubt rise to absorb this in the end anyway, I doubt it’ll break your business.

I believe it will be counter productive as most of the small to medium shops i know sell online as well.
