Pending account block: Upload your UK VAT Number

Hi other sellers!

For the second time we received an email demanding us to upload a VAT registration number, because we “may be legally required to be VAT registered in the United Kingdom (UK)”
We are located in the Netherlands, however we have removed all our FBA stock last year already, so we should not be required to be VAT registered. We also don’t exceed sales of 70000 pounds.
Amazon Seller Support let us know that by “the new law of HMRC that all online sellers in UK should apply for VAT number”.

Does this mean, even though since several months we only ship a few products to the UK per month, with very little profit, we actually need a VAT registration?

I am afraid to make an appeal to the vat number team from amazon, because they would probably temporarily suspend our account to review it more thoroughly.

If anyone knows more about this, I’d be very grateful for help!

If you don’t have your stock in UK and do not exceed the threshold, you DO NOT need to register for UK VAT.

Send your appeal or you will be suspended.

Amazon are using a sledgehammer to crack a nut right now.

Good luck.

PS Whether you make a big or small profit is irrelevant. It’s the sales value that matters.

Just to confirm if you have a company based outside of the UK and us/or have used FBA in the UK (have held stock in the UK) there is/was NO VAT threshold and as thus you will be required by law to register and account for VAT in the UK.

For the scenario of the OP if they never registered when they should it could be that Amazon are being forced to get sellers who were previously nn-compliant to be compliant retrospectively under the new laws passed last month (2018 Finance Act)

I understamd what both of you you’re saying.
In this case it seems that my company has made a mistake in not registering. Thanks for the replies, it makes me realise that we should really take this issue seriously.

There is a comment in the german seller forum, that seller service replied to an inquiry with something like “This email has been sent even if you are not legally required to upload a VAT#.”

If i’m going to use the VAT service from amazon for 400 euro a year per country then they will get a Vat number for me am i right? I think is is the easiest way for me to get a UK vat number.

(If you are required to be VAT registered in a VAT Services on Amazon supported country, your VAT registration number for this country is included as part of your purchase of one year of VAT filing services for this country.)
The annual price is €400 per country for your Amazon channel transactions. If you are required to be VAT registered in a VAT Services on Amazon supported country, your VAT registration number for this country is included as part of your purchase of one year of VAT filing services for this country.

VAT Services on Amazon per country fee covers:

  • VAT registration number (if required)
  • Monthly, quarterly and annual VAT filings as required by subscribed country
  • Intrastat reporting
  • EC Sales List reporting
  • Locally required reporting, such as Spesometro in Italy

Here’s an update: Our deadline for uploading a VAT number is tomorrow, but we still did not register, since we don’t do FBA anymore. I’m curious to see what will happen. I suppose our account will go into review and if we’re lucky they’ll approve it, because we are not required to be VAT registered anymore (one can hope, right?).
