Hi
I have been going through the new prices for Royal Mail code CRL Small Packets Business
I am a little confused as to why these are more expensive for an account holder than the general public
My CRL prices are:-
1st Class Packet 1000g
Net £4 (£3.70 + surcharge .30p) VAT .80p Total £4.80
1st Class Packet 2000g
Net £4.21 (£3.90 +surcharge .31p) VAT .84p Total £5.05
2nd Class Packet 1000g
Net £3.02 (£2.80 + surcharge .22p) VAT .60p Total £3.62
2nd Class Packet 2000g
Net £3.35 (£3.10 + surcharge .25p) VAT .67p Total £4.02
According to Royal Mail BPL Small Parcel up to 2kg
1st Class £3.69
2nd Class £2.99
ONLINE for public Small Parcel
1st Class 2kg £3.69
2nd Class 2kg £2.99
Stamps for public Small Parcel
1st Class 2kg £4.19
2nd Class 2kg £3.49
Therefore
1st 1kg Small Parcel =
Online public £3.69
BPL £3.69
CRL £4.00 (ex VAT)
Stamps £4.19
1st 2kg Small Parcel =
Online public £3.69
BPL £3.69
Stamps £4.19
CRL £4.21 (ex VAT)
So the most expensive way to send a 2kg small parcel is by CRL
Am I missing something here?

BPL, stamps plus online have small , medium and large parcel
CRL is just parcel
So whilst small parcel is more expensive, medium and large equivalent is probably cheaper
Prices above are for dimensions 450mm x 350mm x 160mm (small parcel)
CRL can go up to 610mm x 460mm x 460mm
I get all that, but my observation is
why use CRL (account) when BPL and online C&D (non account) are cheaper for the same thing.
Logic states that a Royal Mail business account holder would pay LESS than the general public
possibly 80% of my parcels are classed as small packets, It never even entered my head to use BPL as I am VAT registered
I have (these days…) fairly small quantities per day (c.20), so have been using the discounted Tracked 24 & 48. (3rd pricing/offer has begun in the last week or so). I just think that they’re pricing they this way in order to get paid up front, rather than on account (i.e. for Cash Flow purposes). Just my theory…
I have just asked Royal mail the same question, and their response was to tell me to go on their site and look at the prices. I responded with “why are you charging me more than you quote on your website?” They have not got back to me.
I looked at Parcel monkey and small parcel is much cheaper. Think it may be time to leave RM altogether and use other couriers who are cheaper and will refund if parcel lost.
Just to add, you can claim for lost parcels on BPL, you can’t for CRL.
I find that Royal Mail tend to make their pricing as confusing to the consumer as possible. I’m VAT registered and have no idea if for Letters I should be using BPL or STL as I cannot seem to find the prices for STL in the business price guide?
Also for large letters, I’m unsure if the fuel surcharge (4%?) is added to the price of CRL before or after VAT. It’s extremely difficult to work out what you are actually paying. Why they don’t just show the price you will pay for the service when you select the postage in C&D I will never know!
In the end I tend to use BPL as it means I can at least claim for the inevitable missing post!
I had a business account with royal mail for 6 years, The strikes severely hurt our business so I decided to move away from them. Also the fact anyone could book a customer collection on cheaper than the same tracked service on my business account when I was spending £60000 + a year with them. Also all the fuel surcharges and fines when they check your mail .
I now buy all my postage through the selling platforms. I still send through royal mail as we do a lot of large letters but I just book a customer collection on and they pick up all my extra post as well. Ive found evri to be ok in fact through all of march on the other main platform parcels under 1 kilo were £1.60 before vat . Apart from the average weight system and the parcel sizes being up to a medium parcel for the same price there is no financial benefits to having the ppi postage. its more hassle now but I feel safer not being completely tied to them especially as how uncertain the future is with royal mail.
The only reason I can think of as to why someone uses CRL instead of BPL for small parcels is for the averaging, but I imagine even with that it would take a lot to reduce it down to a point where what you save on heavier items makes up for the extra you pay on the smaller ones - not sure it would ever actually work out.
Even tracked is cheaper (as general public) at £2.88 (3.45 inc vat) for 48 and £3.46 (£4.15 inc vat) for 24 for a small parcel weighing up to 2kg, which comes with the added benefit of up to £100 compensation which you don’t get with CRL (you can only claim the postage back, nothing for the contents)
