Auto-authorized replacement return scam?

We recently received a return request for an item indicating that the item was missing parts or accessories for a merchant fullfilled item. The item is currently in transit, is not late (delivery promise by amazon buy shipping between 1/8 and 1/14 ), and based on the movement via USPS looks like it will be delivered ahead of schedule despite being shipped almost 2000 miles. Amazon auto authorized a replacement order for the item so now we have to ship out a "replacement" and we have a return pending for the item. Not sure if it is a scam or not or just a misunderstanding how shipping works, but it appears the customer will get two products for the price of one if the item is not returned. Since the second order it is for a "replacement" we were charged 0 for the second order and then will have to pay for a second round of shipping. We assume have to ship out the replacement on time or risk damage to our ODTR based on either late delivery or cancellation. If the customer cancels the return or does not return the "damaged" product are we eligible for a SAFE-T claim for the second item we shipped out.

REPLACEMENT ORDERS are almost always a scam. Amazon used to at least require the buyer to prove they returned the "wrong item" before they would make us ship the replacement. Now, they are making us ship the replacement first, and guess what - the customer is now keeping BOTH items! I haven't figured out how to fight this yet - but get ready!

We just got a return request. They said it was damaged but they hadn't received it yet. Tracking shows it was an undeliverable address and it was returned to sender.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I get a handful of these a year. I thought Amazon didn't put the replacement 'order' on your order list until the return tracking was scanned. Kind of like the RFS.....?
