Just What We Need?

Hi All Sellers of Books,

Newspaper article a few days ago…
People are making thousands selling books on Amazon

More people with scanners and high expectations (based on ludicrous valuations)…

And who don’t read Amazon’s rules before they try to make thousands…

All Best

There was an article a few weeks ago, not on a blog but a US news channel that was telling people how to make $$ selling digital planners on Etsy. Because no one has ever thought about that before! What all these articles fail to tell you is that selling requires a lot of work and marketing. That there are rules to follow and lots of competition. I am sure that if you know what you are doing and you have time, you can make some money selling digital planners or books on KDP or making videos on YouTube, whatever, but most of their readers don’t have a clue or the time to invest, otherwise they would be doing it already.

And be on this forum within a week wondering why they only cleared 20p selling a £5 book.

They are of no competition to you or I.

Postal costs must be really cheap in the US or people do expect to pay postage? I read a post by someone that bought many items 13 outfits for a pittance on BooHoo or somewhere and paid a £3.99 postage fee which OK, we all know the bigger companies have a charge, but in the comments someone said I would begrudge paying the delivery fee… I N F U R I A T I N G!!!

And of course they don’t realise they will be competing with World of Books, Music Magpie etc etc who get postage for pennies.

There will be a few people who have never run a business or have the patience and determination to sell things. Most people will try it and be left with many books and not sell them. Just because something is for sale soesn’t mean it will sell.

Anyone can buy things in bulk and sell them individually but not everyone has the right attitude for selling products. I know people who spent their life savings on buying things, sold them at a low price and they decided they don’t want to waste their time and just throw the products away.

What they also fail to tell you is that Amazon search often throws up matches (even when searching via its barcode scanner) to overpriced duplicates rather than the originals.
For instance, if you scan this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Calypso-David-Sedaris/dp/0349141894

chances are it will match it to this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08X2R2GDC

which looks like something worth listing, even though it is just a duplicate of a very common title oversupplied with numerous cheap offers from megasellers.

It takes quite a lot of experience to sort the wheat from the chaff and I doubt many would persist for long just scanning random books.
