Sales rank and child ASINs
Hello,
I have 1 parent + some child ASINs varying by color, this question is about sales ranking:
- If say the blue color sells 10x the white color, what's the calculated sales rank? The lowest of both? Separate ranking?
The FAQ has this to say:
---
Variations handling depends on the Website Display Group (wdg) of the parent ASIN. In some stores, we add up all the sales for a child ASIN and apply it to the parent ASIN. In these stores, parent ASINs and child ASINs will have the same rank. In other stores, we count the orders for each child ASIN separately and generate sales rank for each child ASIN. Ensure that your child and parent ASINs are assigned to the same website display group, and the parent ASIN has the right browse categories assigned to it or you might not see a sales rank for the same.
---
which implies .... maybe yes, maybe no. Where do I find this "wdg" ?
- If they're separate ranking, does that imply I'm better off closing off some variations to "focus" a higher sales rank on few color variants?
I note for example that the new tagline of 50+ sold this month is not considering the other color variants -- pretty annoying for customers don't get to see that overall the same product sells more. I don't have control over that either...

Greetings @Seller_UGdfjBrPGMm01,
Thanks for reaching out with your concerns with how Sales Ranks function for Variations. The information you got from the Sales Rank FAQ is correct. A Website Display Group or WDG is a collection of products that behave similarly. You could compare this to a category or category browse node.
This means that the way the Sales Rank appears varies on the category and type of product. For example a series of shoes with different sizes but the same style might share a Sales Rank, but a series of shirt with different styles might not. What is is important is ensuring that your products are all in the same correct category and browse node. If the category is different between two children, the Sales Rank will not display together.
It is difficult, as you say, to predict what will be popular with customers. Based on my experience, if you see a pattern of one style or color is more popular, ensuring that that color or style is in stock as much as possible.
If you have concerns regarding your Sales Rank of your product or think there is an error, feel free to provide your most recent Seller Support Case regarding this issue and I will investigate further. If you have any other questions on this issue I am happy to assist where possible. Have a great day.
