Is Merging ASINs the best solution to fix old UPCs bought outside of GS1 years ago?

I've looked through the forums and similar posts seem to indicate the best solution is creating a new ASIN with the correct UPC and merging the new one with the old one. Relevant Post

Summary:

  • Original ASINs were created with UPCs purchased outside of GS1 back in ~2012
  • ASINs are all Brand Registered. Only the brand owner/seller sells on them in the US
  • Brand owner has purchased new UPCs directly from GS1 and wants to update ASINs to the new UPCs
  • Brand owner can provide all relevant proof that they are not scamming or trying to manipulate Amazon's catalog

Concerns:

  • ASINs have combined 20K+ reviews and thousands of orders per month
  • If merging deletes reviews or tanks BSR it would be very costly

My understanding is that a new listing should be created with the correct UPC, which generates a new ASIN. The product details on the new ASIN must be made identical to the old ASIN in every single way possible. We then submit the Merge request to Seller Support.

If we do everything correctly is it to be expected that Ratings/Reviews would cleanly transfer and BSR would not be greatly impacted?

Hello @Seller_vCPeVjUYl65wM,

Thanks for reaching out. As the product will have a new UPC, it will require a new ASIN per the Detail Page Rules policy. You can contact Seller Support to see if they can merge the ASIN's for you, however, they will likely not be able to merge them as they have different UPC's and will be considered a new product. As this would be a new product, it will not pull over any of the reviews or search rank, however, if this is a newer version of the original ASIN, you can use the Newer Version Widget to drive traffic to your new ASIN. If you have a Seller Support Case ID that you would like me to review, please provide it and I will see if there is anything we can do.

Regards,

Michelle
