Is There Any Risk in Leaving My FBA Listing "Out of Stock" for Over a Month?
Hello,
I recently created a new parent ASIN with two child ASINs (FBA, Canada marketplace). I’ve registered for FBA but haven’t completed the shipping plan yet because my products aren’t ready for delivery to Amazon's warehouse.
So currently, both listings show “Currently unavailable” due to lack of inventory.
My question is:
Is there any disadvantage to leaving the listing out of stock for over a month (possibly 1–2 months) while I prepare inventory? Will this impact search ranking, Buy Box eligibility, or listing visibility once my products are finally in stock?
Also, if there is a disadvantage, is there anything I can do now to minimize the negative impact? (e.g., closing the listing temporarily?)
Any insights or tips from those who’ve been in a similar situation would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Hello @Seller_rOwUjnc5IY3xn
Christine here from Amazon Forums.
Thank you for your question about out-of-stock listings. I'll share some important information.
Regarding your concern about leaving listings as "Currently unavailable" for 1-2 months: While it's not ideal, the impact isn't as severe as you might think, especially for new ASINs without prior sales history.
For search ranking, new ASINs start fresh, so you're not losing established ranking. However, keep in mind that during this out-of-stock period, you won't be building any sales history, which is valuable for long-term success. The Amazon algorithm does consider in-stock rates, but new listings aren't penalized as heavily as established ones.
As for Buy Box eligibility, you needn't worry too much. Your eligibility will be evaluated fresh once you have inventory in stock. There's no lasting penalty for this initial out-of-stock period.
My recommendation is to keep the listing active rather than closing it temporarily. Use this time productively to perfect your listing content, verify compliance with Canadian regulations, and complete as much of your FBA shipping plan setup as possible. Once you're closer to having inventory ready, you can utilize the "Reserve Inventory" feature.
One piece of advice I often give to our Canadian sellers: It's far better to launch when you're fully prepared, than to rush and risk compliance issues or poor customer experience.
Best regards,
Christine.
