Spreadsheet mandatory dropdowns not applicable to product line

I am attempting to add products that our company manufacturers, and aren't currently in the Amazon product catalog (New ASINs). All of our products are sold as parent/child variations, with the variation being number of items per pack (10 count, 25 count, 50 count). I've run into difficulty using both the spreadsheet and the manual entry methods.

1. Spreadsheet: there are several mandatory fields on the pet-food spreadsheet that lack an appropriate selection; namely the "Item Type Keyword", "Child Relationship Type", and "Item Form" fields. The options aren't even close. Is there a generic spreadsheet I can use, or is it possible to request additional selections be added to the form?

2. Manual add products: adding variations to the parent (which in our case are 10 count, 25 count, 50 count). The addition of variations triggers new mandatory fields in the "Product Details" section for "Unit Count" and "Unit Count Type". This isn't helpful, as the parent product doesn't have a unit count. The unit count is the variation. Clearly I'm missing something, I've seen thousands of examples of this done correctly on Amazon! I have looked to competitor's products, and their variations are a hot mess. Clearly I'm not the only one with this issue. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

Hi,

It sounds like you’re encountering some of the typical setup challenges, so I hope I can help a little.

1. Spreadsheet Issues:

  1. It might be worth revisiting the 'Definitions' and 'Valid Values' worksheets.
  2. For a number of attributes, you can actually insert 'free text,' so some attributes aren’t limited to what’s shown in the Valid Values worksheet.
  3. "Child Relationship Type": This defines whether each row is a parent or child listing in a variation set. Since all of your products are available in different versions, it should be possible to set this for each row in your spreadsheet. Just to double-check: Does your FlatFile currently contain both parent and child products, or have you only inserted the individual child products so far?

2. Manual Entry Issues with Unit Count:

  1. You mentioned, "This isn't helpful, as the parent product doesn't have a unit count." How are the child products different from each other? Your username suggests pet products, so I’m assuming the child products differ in quantity (number of pieces) or size (weight)?
  2. "Unit Count Type" can be set to pieces or a weight unit.
  3. "Unit Count" defines the quantity. For example, in Germany, we measure in grams, so “Unit Count Type” could be grams and “Unit Count” 500.
  4. Since the parent product is a “virtual” listing (not an actual item), you don’t need to provide that data for it—only for child products. If the interface still insists on these attributes, it might be a sign that the product isn’t correctly defined as a parent product.

Best regards, Michael

Hi there @Seller_lwtnMluWIpyHJ,

In general with variations I recommend creating the individual children and then using the Variation Wizard to build the variation once the Children are working as expected.

Were the steps provided by @Seller_i6S8knzW6zU6Z helpful? In general there is no universal template for product creation, but you can see most templates using the Inventory file templates, style guides, and browse tree guides.

If you continue to have issues please provide your most recent Seller Support Case and I can see what options I can offer. Thank you for your understanding.
