[Disbursement Blocked] Amazon asking to pay VAT for sales done by previous account owner

Here's a brief outline:

  • I transferred Amazon account to my legal entity (following Amazon's official account transfer process and re-verification) in October 2022.
  • My LTD company was established in October 2022 (Non-UK established entity).
  • The previous owner had applied for VAT exemption because of UK establishment.
  • Me or my company has no relationship with the previous owner/partner or company. The account was found from a flippa listing.
  • Since May of this year, Amazon is flagging that I need to pay unpaid VAT since Jan 2021. My disbursements from sales are blocked until VAT is paid.
  • I disagree with the VAT liability calculated by Amazon. They are including VAT from sales done by previous account owner. The account came under my ownership only since Oct 2022.
  • I have already communicated agreement to pay VAT for sales done by my company (since October 2022) because my company is not UK established.
  • Why should I have to pay VAT owed by sales performed by the previous owner?

I have been trying since May to get the above point across to Amazon Support/KYC/DRTAX etc. But somehow, I don't seem to be able to get to any real specialist who can provide closure. How difficult can this be? I'm really at my wits end at this stage - does someone know of any channel I can avail to escalate this to a real human being? How can I get expert attention to have this resolved?

Thanks in advance!

This sounds like too complex an issue to be sorted out by fellow sellers, especially as you say you are not established in UK. Can you not ask on the marketplace where you are established ?

Failing any other help, then you may need to try mediation.
