Inquiry Regarding VAT Refund for Services in the Last 6 Months

Hello Community,

I recently registered for VAT and have been paying VAT on Amazon fees since August 1, 2024. However, at the time I started paying VAT, I was not registered for VAT.

I would like to know if it is possible to recover or claim back the VAT paid on services for the last 6 months. Further also tell a claim back will be made from hmrc or amazon.

Any guidance or experiences shared would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

There will be a date that your VAT registration is valid from, a go live date if you like. Sadly any VAT paid on services received before that date are unrecoverable. Do however do a stock take on the VAT live day as your accountant maybe able to recover the VAT on your stock purchases that were unsold before you started charging VAT on your sales. VAT returns and claims are via HMRC not Amazon. All this assumes you are UK based.

You can't claim pre-registration VAT paid on services. If you paid VAT on stock that you still have then you can claim VAT on that as you will be charging VAT on it going forward.

You can do a VAT reclaim on anything bought for business use that you still have (ie equipment) - it was three years backdate when I done it but that may have changed.

You can claim for services up to 6 months before registration date, which can be found on the gov.uk website as outlined below, taken directly from their website...

Purchases before registration

You can reclaim VAT paid on goods or services bought before you registered for VAT if you bought them within:

4 years for goods you still have or goods that were used to make other goods you still have

6 months for services

You can only reclaim VAT on purchases for the business now registered for VAT. They must relate to your ‘business purpose’. This means they must relate to VAT taxable goods or services that you supply.

You can also claim for other incidentals moving forward....

Examples

Half of your mobile phone calls are personal. You can reclaim 50% of the VAT on the purchase price and the service plan.

You work from home and your office takes up 20% of the floor space in your house. You can reclaim 20% of the VAT on your utility bills.
