Chargeback £3,662.45 on a £69.99 Order – How is This Possible?

Hi everyone,

I just got a chargeback for £3,662.45 on an order where the item was sold for only £69.99.

Item Price: £69.99

Chargeback Amount: £3,662.45

The item was delivered with no issues, and there were no refund or return requests before this chargeback. I’ve contacted Amazon, but this seems like a huge error.

Has anyone experienced something like this before? How did you resolve it?

Whilst not the same level I have had a chargeback which was significantly higher than the order amount.

Seller support was terrible and couldn't/wouldn't give any more information. I defended the chargeback giving the information they requested and I was told I was not liable for the chargeback.

My best advice is to defend the chargeback in the first instance. If you have tracking to show the item was delivered that is really good as a defence. All chargebacks I had on Amazon, once defended, I have not been liable for.

It maybe that the customer spent that amount in total and your order was one of those orders. In the unlikely instance Amazon took more than the value of the goods I think you could easily win if you took legal action against them.

Now, because of this massive chargeback, I can’t withdraw any funds from my account. This is seriously affecting my business.

I'm no expert - but I have heard that some credit card companies impose a big fee for investigation when a customer requests a chargeback .

Amazon really do make their own rules lately and it's becoming increasingly difficult for us sellers to exist on here.

It sounds like an easy thing to defend. That £69.99 I don't really care at this point. The worst part is I do not have an access to £3,662.45 because of someones mistake.

Hi,

I had this same issue, I sold a pc case for £70 to the customer I assume they brought it together with other pc parts for just under £3000, buyer was clearly a scammer and said it did not arrive but I got the whole 3000 with held from my funds (I had pictures of item held in their doorway with the number and house name visable, gps at their door and signature but amazon took their side). Amazon took 4 months to sort it out and about 50 hours of my time, they simply have no interest in helping. if I was you I would take them court for damages

Amazon have previously mentioned 'consequential damages' - could that apply?

Eg: Copy power adapter sold, but that blew up a Laptop, so you are paying for the laptop?

It’s been nearly two weeks since I reported this issue involving a £3,662.45 chargeback on a £69.99 order.

Since then, I’ve:

Emailed multiple Amazon teams including Seller Support, Payments, Legal, and the UK Managing Director’s office

Sent several follow-ups requesting a final response so I can take this to the UK Financial Ombudsman

Received no support, no resolution, and no explanation

This situation is still unresolved, and I just want a clear answer and my money back. The frozen funds have now disrupted my business operations — I’ve had to delay restocking one of my best-selling brands due to this, which is affecting both cash flow and customer satisfaction.

If any Amazon forum moderators are reviewing this, I would really appreciate if it can be escalated internally.

If any sellers have dealt with something similar or successfully resolved a chargeback like this, I’d welcome any advice.
