Unjustified Referral Fee Charge on Refunded Order
Dear Moderators,
I am reaching out regarding an issue with a recent order on my Amazon Business Plan account. We received an order and successfully fulfilled it. The customer later requested a return, and we acted proactively by keeping the item for them and issuing a full refund.
The total amount we received for the order was CAD 128, yet the amount refunded was CAD 149—an additional CAD 21 was charged to us by Amazon. This amount is labeled as a “referral fee,” which is concerning for two reasons:
1. The item was fully refunded to the customer, meaning we did not retain any revenue from the sale.
2. As a Business Plan seller, it is unclear why we are being charged a referral fee on a returned item.
Unfortunately, Amazon support agents have not been helpful. Instead of providing clarity, they repeatedly transfer the chat between representatives, wasting our time, only to ultimately state, “this is the policy,” without further explanation.
This is my first month selling on Amazon, and I am extremely disappointed by the lack of support and transparency regarding fees. I kindly request your urgent attention to this matter and a clear explanation of why this charge was applied.

Christine here from Amazon Forums.
I was checking the order ID 701-4974422-9994636 and I do see that indeed there is a charge for a referral fee.
Please know that this is something that has always been charged to sellers, please check the link below to find about the guidelines.
According to your product categorization, this falls under Beauty, Health and Personal Care this one is divided en 2 section:
- 8% for products with a total sales price of $10.00 or less, and
- 15% for items with a total sales price greater than $10.00
If you still believe this is an invalid charged, please share with me an order that has been returned, and you have not been charged for the referral fee in order to double-check.
