As par my experience, manual keywords are always better than Auto. But for a starter, advise you to go for auto initially. After a month or so, download the campaign reports and build a database of best keywords. If not sufficiently clear, wait another month.

Dear seller, You can start with automatic targeting to get your ads up and running quickly. Once you have gathered some data, you can switch to manual targeting for more control.

I think you should start with Broad Match and download the Campaign Data search term and putting relevant in negative will be more helpful. But make sure never to spend more on PPC if your ads are not profitable. Make sure ads are overall profitable otherwise we end up spending with losses.
