Buyer says give VAT invoice or refund 20%

Hi everyone,

I have been contacted by a buyer who wants a VAt invoice. I am not VAT registered and understand that I could put ‘N/A’ in the VAT column so no worries there. However, at the end of his email the buyer writes:
“In case you are not VAT registered, we can accept partial refunds, the amount of 20% VAT content”.

This seems to be a little off to me and I’m wondering what my next move should be.

I’m assuming as you are not vat registered you didn’t actually charge him vat… so there is nothing to refund.

Tell them your items do not include VAT as you’re not VAT registered, therefore there’s nothing to refund.

Your buyer was not charged VAT so he cannot be refunded.
Tell him that; and that his threatening message is being reported to Amazon.
Your buyer probably tries this on wth all non registered sellers. Scares them into a refund!

you can only give a vat invoice if you are vat registered. you have to hit a certain sales threshold to be vat registered. report him

Inform the customer that you are vat registered and hence you have not charged any.
Put Amazon on notice,as you are on the right. They will give you a reference in case the matter escalates. They will be on your side all along then. I have tried and it helps.

we get these? we just reply that we are not vat registered, how ever to cover your self, check the sale item is marked accordingly - non vat
in edit the item on the offer page the “product tax code” should be blank for your default settings, a quick check on the “i” bubble at the side should read “A_GEN_NOTAX” , but nothings straight forward with amazon.
If it has something else you will need to check your main business status on amazon is non VAT?
good luck
Its probably just another customer chancing his arm

This seems to becoming a trend with certain buyers . This is the second thread I have seen with virtually the same type of demands by the customer .
Customer knows very well that he was not charged vat after you had advised him that there was no vat in the transaction . He than tries to manipulate a 20% discount , knowing very well that certain sellers may fold out of fear of an A to Z or bad rating .
This is one of the many negative consequences of Amazon’s less than objective approach to buyer- seller disputes . Many buyers know they hold a sword over sellers . Sellers on the other hand fearful of unjustified buyer claims often fold so as the avoid negative feedback or suspension .

Stand your ground on this one . The buyer is behaving maliciously . Like others advise , notify Amazon and ask them to investigate the buyers behavior . He may have been reported before

The customer is being a devious cheapskate. But still be polite to the idiot.

Follow the solid advice above and you should be fine.

You could also offer a refund if he\she wants to return it as long as it’s unused. Return postage to be paid by buyer as there’s no seller fault.
Good luck

there is the option to report the message (if it came through amazon messages) with ‘the buyer is trying to defraud me’ or words to that effect
