Unfortunately, this is exactly what we are experiencing as well. Most of the time, the products are not returned to us, and Amazon refunds the customer without us receiving the items back. For this reason, I avoid selling high-value products as it's too risky.

Even for our small value returnable vests, Customers return it as "Customer Damaged", and it's basically a used, worn item which is a waste (we do use these sometimes for cleaning!). This is the harsh reality of selling online, as many unethical customers or competitors do this.
But on the Positive side, if we are with FBA, at least the removals are free, returns processing is not charged separately (gets included in FBA Fulfilment fee), and returns not received in FBA in 45 days are automatically refunded. So, maybe FBA is the way to go for high value items as well.
