Why do I have damage charges?

Hello, I just received an email from Amazon Seller Performance Team stating:

"Your Amazon Seller account is currently deactivated and placed in a dormant status due to a policy violation. We have charged up to a maximum of €3,400 to recover damages as a result of your policy violation in accordance with sections 6 and 7 of "Amazon’s Business Solutions Agreement" and section 9 of the "Amazon Payments Europe User Agreement"."

Why do I have a 3400 euro fee?

My account has been deactivated for years now. I haven't sold anything on my account for more than 5 years, and my dashboard shows that my account health is "healthy". Why am I charged these fees?

I do not want to reactivate my account or continue selling on Amazon. Am I still liable for paying those fees?

There has been several threads to the same effect. Same message, same value of €3,400. No one is sure of not if this is a scam email - only amazon are able to confirm, so your best bet is to email managingdirector@amazon.co.uk and ask if the email is genuine.

As above reply, you are not the only one (possibly at least 5 or 6 now) who has received this exact same email and posted on here about it. If your account has not been active for so long I would tend to ignore it.

It would be good if a forum mod could confirm or otherwise if this is an Amazon generated email or not, as it is obviously causing considerable anxiety to sellers.
