Subject: Hazmat Misclassification of Non-Hazardous Products (Shoes)

Hello fellow sellers,

I’m dealing with a frustrating issue where Amazon has incorrectly flagged my products as hazardous materials (hazmat). The products are shoes, which do not contain any chemicals, batteries, or components that would make them hazardous in any way.

Amazon is requesting documentation such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS) or battery exemption sheets to resolve the issue. However, I cannot provide these documents for the following reasons:

SDS Sheets: These are meant for chemical-based products or items that may pose a hazard. My shoes do not contain any chemicals, so an SDS cannot be created.

Battery Exemption Sheets: These apply to products containing batteries that are deemed safe. Since my products don’t contain batteries, I cannot provide these either.

This misclassification is causing major disruptions to my business, especially since I have over 500 ASINs affected (each size is a separate ASIN). I’m unable to generate the requested documentation because it’s irrelevant to my products, and I’m struggling to find a resolution.

Has anyone faced a similar situation where Amazon requested documents for non-hazardous products? Specifically:

How did you handle it when you couldn’t provide SDS or exemption sheets because they didn’t apply?

Is there a way to escalate this issue to a team at Amazon that understands these specific cases?

How long did it take to resolve the issue and have your listings reinstated?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help!

Hi @Seller_kVsXYS5f3lydO,

Based on the help pages, here's how I suggest handling this situation:

  1. Since your shoes don't contain any harmful chemicals, you can use the "Exemption sheet for products without harmful chemicals" template. You can download this from the right side of the page at Manage dangerous goods classification. See https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/G201367210
  2. Important: You'll need to submit a separate exemption sheet for each ASIN variant (each size), as documents aren't automatically applied to child ASINs. See "If I submit an SDS or exemption sheet for a "parent" ASIN, is that document used to review all the "child" ASINs?" at https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/GS4XSYZF34EWDNAX
  3. According to the help pages, only light-up shoes, shoe polish, and shoe stain removers are typically considered as potential dangerous goods in the shoes category. See "Examples of possible dangerous goods > Shoes" section at https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/G200525640
  4. If you disagree with the classification after submitting the exemption sheets, you can click "Dispute classification" on the Manage dangerous goods classification page. See "Reasons for product review and possible next steps" section at https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/G201749580

I hope thise helps.

Kind regards, Michael
