VAT when purchasing from China?

Hi, sorry its another VAT question… Does anyone have any guidance on if VAT is paid when importing goods from China?
My suppliers seem to think that Im not paying any VAT on buying my product, I also do DDP shipping which they seem to think they have paid the duty on already?
Looking to see if I can claim anything back on stock purchases as looks like I will be going VAT registered.

Thanks

As your goods come through customs, you are liable to pay custom duty, which is dictated by commodity code and varies from product to product.

VAT is chargeable at the same point.

You can then claim the VAT back on your next VAT return.

Ship it DDP and all duties and taxes are paid by the seller/sender. nothing for you to recover.

Ship it DAP and you (the receiver/you) would be able to recover the VAT you’d have to pay additionally to import it (but not any customs duties) - and this is only if you are fully registered for VAT - not flat rate.
