Verification process dilemma
I’m volunteer treasurer of a tiny fundraising group on a steam railway run by a committee of just four people. All monies raised are dedicted to funding improvements on the railway, which is totally operated by volunteers. I’ve been selling second hand railway books on Amazon for 12 years, originally describing myself as a sole trader. I should apparently have registered as “non-profit making” as no individual gains from my efforts. Our tiny group is affiliated to a Trust purely for oversight purposes. Verification have rejected two Authorisation Letters, the second one was in their sample format and signed by the Trust’s finance director/trustee. They have now asked for information on ALL the trustees, which I find unacceptable. It seems they may close my seller account. And they keep saying “we are here to help!”.

I repeat that the small GWR Cheltenham Area Group (GWRCAG) is only affiliated to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust (GWRT) for oversight purposes, and are required to send them a copy of our annual accounts, which have already been inspected by an independent examiner. GWRT has no direct involvement in the operation of GWRCAG, which has several other income streams as well as an Amazon seller account. Similarly GWRCAG has no involvement in the operation of GWRT, so it seems it’s not our organisation.
However, verification have asked me to provide a list of all current trustees of your organization. Include the following information for each trustee: Full name including any middle names Date of birth The position the trustee holds If applicable, the percentage of voting rights for each trustee in the organization.
The GWRT finance trustee has today said "They are asking for information that even Companies House and the Charity Commission don’t ask for. I would have to ask every trustee for permission to disclose this information, and some may decline.
So it’s possible I can’t provide the information verification are asking for and may have to suffer having my seller account deactivated. Perhaps I’d better start looking for another outlet to make money for, in order to sell our books.
