Average Weights & CRL codes on click and drop

I have just had a long conversation with somebody at Royal Mail about this but i am not 100% convinced by the answers, so am looking for any reassurance from somebody already doing this.

I am moving from OBA

  1. Typically I might post 25 large letters which will be a mish mash of weights from 100g up to 750G but usually will average out at less than 250. Using C&D I think that by selecting these items on the order screen, and making them a batch I can just enter a single weight even though this will not be an accurate weight for any single one of these items.?

  2. Under OBA Sometimes I would enter two lines for large letters, because I couldn’t average them at less than 250g. For example would end up with 23 items average weight of 240g, (96p each ) and 2 items at average weight of 490g (£1.11) each. I am slightly worried that the way C&D works I will be forced to pay the higher price for all 25 items. Can I avoid this as long as I select separate batches for each weight group of large letters?

Any advice or shared experience would be greatly welcomed

yes you can create as many batches as you like for one particular shipping service… i send maybe 30-40 large letters per day… 95% are all under 99g… 5% are sometimes over… i put everything through at 99g so that i pay the same average price for all my items. it actually works out well for me.

You’re lucky you’ve been getting away with doing it wrong for so long. Two entries for the same unit type is a no no.

Couple of points

  1. Average Weight on any order via OBA is one per service, so 2 x SU1 for Large Letter 48 is not allowed. Revenue Protection have said that you can do as many orders as needed, to get around that.

  2. We always sail very close to the limit on 100g, but remedy it by adding a few letters (uprating) to RM48 with new stickers etc. It wont really affect a few items per day but we have several hundred and it makes a good difference. The most we ever had to uprate was 30.

If you are using RM48 then presumably you are using code CRL on OBA which means that the LL should all be weighed together and then divided by the number of items to get the average.

If it is not beneficial to average then you can split them into bands of 0-100g, 101-250g, 251-500g, 501-750 and then you can use 2nd Class post (NOT RM48) which is code BPL on the OBA system and that means you don’t average the weights. Bear in mind though that using 2nd Class instead of RM48 means the 2D bar code won’t give delivery confirmation.

You can also use a mix of both codes / Services if it is beneficial to do so.

I have been looking at C&D as well

we send LL BPL 1st class in 3 different weight bands
Packages in SU1 as an average - or in bands depending on what the weights are and whether we save or lose money 1st and 2nd

Half our items go via courier

Cant import orders from our website.
As orders come in we immediately dispatch

honestly , it all looks a right pain in the !!!

I notice I can’t even paste an address in, I have to do it line by line.

I cant get my head round it, no way will my other half understand!
