Do pending orders reduce inventory?
I have an FBM order "Pending" for 20 units. Has that inventory already been taken out? If the pending order fails, does the inventory come available again?

Yes when someone orders a product and it is pending, inventory should be deducted.
However, I had 5 units left of something on Tuesday, sold, 6, and when I went to check the inventory it still showed 5 units available.
Did you check your inventory on Amazon compared to what you have in your warehouse? If so was it correct?

When we have 50 units, (or 35 or 20 or whatever) left in stock, competitors will order that many and leave the order pending, blocking our inventory so that they can sell theirs.....
and then cancel.
(only on certain types of highly competitive, close-knit competitor types of products)

Hey @Seller_utz0hrpz55h8T, great question. As detailed on the Pending Orders help page, (emphasis mine) The quantity available for the listing is subtracted from your quantity in Manage Inventory. If there was a quantity of one at the time the order was placed, the listing will be removed from the Amazon offer page and appear in Manage Inventory with a quantity of zero while the order is being processed.
As to this question:
yes it would.
Hope that helps, and wishing you many sales!
