Amazon uk needs vat document but i am not vat registered

discussion.

Hello. For about 3 months I have had a message on my amazon account that I need to submit vat registration documents.

I do not pay vat and don't sell enough to pay it

I have contacted amazon support about 5 times - I usually get a cut and paste copy of the new rules for vat.

I did once get a link to vat exemption which I filled in and now it says I am exempt. However the message on my account to submit vat documents remains. Afterwards I submitted my unique tax payer reference letter but they rejected it.

I have no products listed in other countries.

Has anyone else had this problem. If your a self employed seller and you sell less than 84000 a year are you getting the same vat message.

The threshold is now £90,000, not £84,00 (never was), was 85,000. The VAT exemption link is now irrelevant as we now all pay VAT on fees, but is useful for automatic invoices for orders from business customers. I am a sole-trader and do not have that message. Is there a reason why they may think you are from overseas ?

All online retailers are now on the hook for any unpaid VAT, as they are now considered jointly responsible for any unpaid VAT from their store.

So it will depend on a few things.

1, Your sales, if your sales indicate that you are over the VAT threshold you have to be VAT registered.

If your sales indicate you are likely to go over the threshold of VAT then Amazon can and will ask for this as if your going to go over it, then you need to register for VAT or contact the VAT office and ask for an exemption explaining why your going over and why it wont happen again.

This is primarily for a one off year where a builder for example may go over but not every year.

2, Your country of residency, if your a non dom in the UK and sell into the UK then you need a VAT number.

For every EU country you hold physical stock in, you need a VAT number, as if its held on its soil it triggers the VAT requirement. This can include where you have enabled Pan European or other settings and the stock is moved around.

3, Your employment status as a self employed seller is largely not an issue. However, Amazon will want to know that your business activities are registered with HMRC to pay any taxes.

It could be worth contacting HMRC to ask for a letter outlining your below the threshold if you are and that you dont need a VAT number currently.

But typically it will be because of the above, either earning more than or projected to earn more than the threshold

From HMRC

You must register if either:

your total taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000 (the  VAT  threshold)

you expect your taxable turnover to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days

You must also register (regardless of taxable turnover) if all of the following are true:

you’re based outside the UK

your business is based outside the UK

you supply any goods or services to the UK (or expect to in the next 30 days)
