No you only have to buy postage from Amazon if you are sending Letter size mail. If you send Small Parcels, then buying on Amazon is cheaper than the PO - 50p cheaper, and that soon adds up !.
Large Letter is the same price as the PO, but using Buy Shipping you guarantee that you will not have any problems with VTR metric.
If you do use the PO then you must be sure that you confirm shipment correctly and enter the code without hyphens and spaces.

after 10+ years of franking machines and then direct Royal Mail accounts, we changed over to buy shipping from Amazon last November.
Although recent changes have made it harder to print labels out, overall we strangely get far fewer A-Z claims and any NEG- feedback left regarding ‘lateness’ is wiped out, so pays off in the long run.
100% use it if you are only a small seller.

You do not have to use Amazon at all but if you source your own courier/use post office then you have to supply a tracking number to fulfil the requirements that Amazon place on your account, also from September you will not get paid until delivery is recorded or the last of the expected delivery dates as estimated by Amazon. So if you are using stamps/franking and no tracking, your metrics suffer and you won't get paid as quickly either. It's supposed to be about the customer experience, isn't everything? but really it's just Amazon taking over everything you do........
