Changing Old Title and Brand Owner

Hi, New to selling on Amazon and listed a product by a major Asian company with their barcode on the package. The product was already for sale on Amazon but the title says "2017 NEW" . I of course want to correct that as I am selling new 2025 products.

Amazon says I cannot as I am not the "Brand Owner". What exactly is a Brand Owner? Is that the person who created the ASIN? It certainly not the company themselves as they have been around since the 1920's and don't sell directly on Amazon

Amazon says the brand owner must approve the change but considering they haven't updated since 2017 I don't think they are even around anymore. Does brand ownership expire?

Also the brand isn't even correct. They person used a sub-brand as the brand name, not the actual manufacturer. In fact most listing from this Brand are all messed up.

Amazon support told me to buy a new UPC code and list the product as a new product but looking online it looks like I cannot buy a UPC for a packaged product with manufactures barcode already there. Which this product does have.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
