Amazon thinks Isle of Wight is a Channel Island

We are an Isle of Wight based company. We are 100% UK established. Amazon have decided we are not UK Established for VAT purposes and are claiming tens of thousands of pounds in VAT. On top of holding back our disbursements.

I have called the Account Health Team and I have it confirmed it's because a decision has been made that the IOW is a Channel Island and therefore outside of the UK. I have sent lots of details proving our business address as well as a Wikipedia page on the Isle of Wight and other confirmation that the Isle of Wight isn't one of the 4 Channel Islands yet Amazon still persist.

There is no way on Earth I am going to pay them a penny for VAT based on this reason. We are currently not registered for VAT as we are just under the threshold. I have seen in other threads this doesn't matter but I have seen that some companies who pay VAT are getting a VAT refund to pay Amazon back what they've paid HMRC in this crazy circle of madness. For us, this wouldn't work because we haven't paid the VAT to claim back (under the threshold).

I need an Amazon employee who understands this to respond. I have tried to reach out to Amazon Spencer and I hope this is picked up because it's causing undue stress.

I think that there are enough sellers on here going through the same craziness to join together in a class action lawsuit.

Did you receive an email about the VAT being owed, or the disbursements being held? If so, can you post it here?

I wouldn't necessarily believe what the Account Health Team has told you. It could be that the person you were in contact didn't know what the reason was and just took a guess at it and got it wrong.

How close to going over the threshold are you? Are you calculating it on a rolling 365 days? I'm thinking it's more likely they either think your revenue is higher than the threshold, or is about to cross it.
