Can I improve my product and keep the same ASIN?

Hello Everyone,

Something about improving on the product I sell. If I get some negative reviews from customers on my product then, rather than sitting idle and letting my competitors take the opportunity to improve on it, may I go ahead and ask my supplier to eliminate product defects and start selling an improved version of it? May I use the same ASIN as before?

Hope to get replies from someone knowledgeable. Thank you.

Best regards,

Hello @Seller_R1D4eckg9pilk,

Thank you very much for reaching out, this is Lucre, and I'm happy to assist!

I understand you want to know if you can keep the same ASIN on an improved product.

Please know that you can request defect correction on the product and keep the same ASIN as long as the product keeps the same GTIN/UPC.

However, the manufacturer might need to change the UPC for the product depending on the type of correction or update in the product.

According to GS1:" Any time a change is made that impacts how a retailer or consumer might assess an item, a new GTIN needs to be assigned. Some examples:

  • Net weight changed from 7 oz. to 10 oz.
  • Adding a feature to a product
  • Adding or removing certain ingredients
  • Making a product “gluten-free”"

For more information, please refer to the GS1 official web page.

My recommendation would be that you discuss this with the manufacturer and understand any implication that a defect correction could have on the item because this may impact the consumer perception, if that happens then a new UPC will be required and therefore a new ASIN should be created.

Please refer to the below policy about ASIN creation for more information about when new ASINs are required:

Hope you find this useful, if you have any question please let me know.
