Strange parent/child error messages when attempting to update a standalone product by uploading a template

Hi all,

I am attempting to update a product by uploading the appropriate template but this is returning two errors:

'Relationship from parent SKU XX-XXXX-XXXX to child SKU XX-XXXX-XXXX was refused because the SKU XX-XXXX-XXXX would enter a circular relationship when traversing package_contains hierarchy relationships from the root.' (note that all the redacted SKUs have the same value, that of my listing that I'm trying to update.)

and

'The parent SKU XX-XXXX-XXXX was refused because there exists at least one non-approved package_contains relationship. Address any other issues associated with the SKU before resubmitting the relationship.'

I can't work out what is going on because this item is neither a parent or a child, it stands alone, and I am leaving all the parentage fields blank (Parentage Level, Child Relationship Type, Parent SKU, Variation Theme Name). This item shouldn't have any parentage relationships and I'm not trying to create one.

I'm similarly baffled by the second error message because I've left the Package Level, Package Contains SKU Quantity and Package Contains SKU Identifier fields blank (this is a standalone unit, and these fields are optional and appear to be more relevant for cases/pallets). The word 'parent' in the second error message suggests the two issues may be related, but I have no idea what is causing the problem.

I've asked seller support but expect them to be as cryptic as they usually are, so thought I'd ask here as well! Has anyone encountered anything similar?

Thanks a lot!

Hey @Seller_uoSVzrgYQxxb8,

The issue appears to be that there might be existing relationship data in the system for this SKU that's conflicting with your current update attempt.

Even though you're not trying to create any relationships now, the SKU might have previous parent-child or package relationships still stored in Amazon's database. The system might be trying to maintain these relationships while processing your update.

When contacting them, specifically ask them to:

  1. Check for any existing relationships in the backend
  2. Clear any legacy relationship data for this SKU
  3. Confirm when the SKU is completely independent

Let me know if you need more guidance on any of these steps!

Cheers, Ezra
