New UK Seller, do I need to register as a sole trader?

Hi all, recently set up my Amazon seller account and just wondering if I need to register as a sole trader, individual etc?

I also don't see making more than about 12k per year.

I now have a message on my dashboard asking to verify my business details, so any help from someone here would be greatly appreciate!

Thanks,

Alex

Sounds like you're a business, so would need to register with HMRC as at least a Sole Trader and on Amazon too choosing one of the Business Accounts.

Yes, if you are buying goods with the intention to sell on for profit then you MUST register with HMRC as sole-trader - not the individual seller account on Amazon - that is only for selling off your own personal second-hand items (such as books, CDs,DVDs etc).

You need an Amazon BUSINESS Seller Account, and once you have registered with HMRC you will need to provide Amazon with your UTR.

If you are keen to run this long term as a business, then best is start with Pvt Ltd from day one. Amazon is a mess these days if you decide to later on move from sole trader to ltd. Also if you want to grow it make sense because when you run as sole trader, you as a person are responsible while in case of Ltd liability is for company. I will say if you not sure take advise from an accountant. These days running Ltd is not expensive you might end up spending few hundred £s extra per year.
