Setup Account wrong from the outset... Now stuck?

Hi Guys,

I’m in the process of setting-up as a new seller and keen to get started.
As I’m already employed, after looking into tax differences and problems changing seller type I decided to commit and opt to setup a new Ltd company, setup as a professional seller and invest in some FBA software etc… Go all in and hope for the best…

After clicking ‘start selling’ I initially selected my seller type as an ‘Individual’ whilst I was weighing-up the different options starting-out. But because I submitted this / clicked-through to the Personal Info forms it registered with Amazon. I was then unable to change it back, despite deleting all cookies, trying a different browser and so on. For the life of me couldn’t get back to that page to change to Private Company without it redirecting to the form.

Thought I would give it a go, fill-out the forms and hopefully it would ask me again. But no…

So I’m now therefore stuck in the exact position I was trying to avoid (changing from Individual to Ltd Co.), have registered the now setup Ltd company (as of today) as the account name and from what I’ve read on here could be stuck trying to resolve this for possibly months! :frowning:

Should I cancel my account and start again with a new email address? Bearing in mind the company name will be the same?
Or should I go through the apparent rigmarole of changing seller type?
Can I continue in the meantime and start selling regardless?

I know it’s a bit dumb but I’m new to all of this and would appreciate anyone’s constructive input.

You can’t cancel the account and can’t have more than one except for certain circumstances, so you’ll have to go through the process.

I actually did the same but in the opposite direction. Needed to list as a sole trader but accidentally put in my Ltd company number instead of the UTR. Raise a case and they should release the fields for you (don’t expect anything confirming they’ve done it), and the whole process took about 4 months before someone called me to unblock my account. After another small issue I’m just ready to start listing now!

Might be worth you reading all the info available in the ‘Seller University’.

Thanks for the tip Jilly, wasn’t aware of the resource but will check it out.

Unless you went through the verification process after the initial “Welcome to Amazon” greeting then no, you haven’t necessarily been released on to the unsuspecting masses quite yet.
Ready to sell doesn’t always equate with allowed to sell… and if allowed to sell pending verification then don’t expect release of funds until the verification process is finished…

Good news! Your Selling on Amazon payment account has been activated.

I now have the option to add products / make selling applications but yes I understand this is a process and not an automatic right.

In either case, the account will be closed and the verification process restarted as a Private Company, so not sure this is a pressing matter for now?

Hi Pips, glad to hear it’s not just me! Did you consider the option of closing the account and starting afresh? That’s effectively what I am looking to do, although I had made little progress so hopefully nothing lost other than a bit of time.

Just to throw my 2cents in here.

As others have said, don’t open a second account, without getting permission from Amazon first.
This permission MUST come from Seller performance. Do not rely on Support saying it’s ok to do that.

Are you sure you want to go straight to Ltd company.
This is generally not worth it, unless you are earning more than about 40k per year in self employment.

Your best bet is to get the original account verified, then change it to Sole trader.
The process can be short, but can also take some time. But safer at the end of the day.

As to bank accounts, as a sole trader you do not need a separate account to run your business.
Most accountants will ask you to open a business account as it is far easier to keep track of business spending etc. The banks don’t restrict this kind of use of the account.
But overall, it is generally easier to have a separate account.
