Can I claim back VAT between registering VAT and getting VAT number?

Hey.

I registered for VAT and was due to start paying the VAT man from 1st March 23.
I had to wait 2 months for the VAT number to be sent and i uploaded that to Amazon and gave the date of VAT registration.

So i’m getting charged Amazon fees without VAT now.

My question is, can i claim the VAT back on all the sale fees from 1st March until I gave the VAT number to Amazon?

I was just about to ask you!
It’s been so long since I did it, I wasn’t sure if you were able to get it back from Amazon.

Ok. i failed to mention that I’m on a flat rate scheme. My accountant has said that I can’t claim it back because of that.

It still feels odd that I am paying the VAT fees to amazon AND have to give 7.5% VAT to the VAT man.
Should i still try and claim this VAT back from Amazon if the accountant wont touch it?

Basically Amazon should not be charging VAT on their fees at all as the UK is out of scope for VAT treatment.

However, they have been. But anyone (even a non VAT registered business) can exempt themselves by applying to Amazon (although I am not sure how far you can backdate the VAT).

Once you are VAT registered you apply the reverse charge scheme to Amazon fees (VAT is calculated on the fees but is added to both the incoming and outgoing VAT so cancelling each other out). I am not sure is you still have to apply reverse charge when on flat scheme - accountant should advise.

I am just wondering if the VAT number on your Amazon fees invoice where they charges VAT is their Luxemburg or U.K. VAT number?
