"New" Copies of a 1932 book listed at over £1000

How does one report a scam seller? Check out the listings here of a 1932 book with “New” condition listings at over £1000 each from rbmbooks and SerendipityBooksLtd. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00086J2UU/

I’m guessing these are dropshippers creating listings automatically using software?

Out of curiosity, how do you know it isn’t “new”? It could be an extremely well-preserved, never used book. Unlikely, I know but still… Just imagine if they owned the printing press that printed the book and they discovered it in storage after the business was handed down between the generations. Sometimes, you see some right strange antique things that have never been used; admittedly they’re probably better suited to the ‘like-new’ category as opposed to ‘new’. - This is probably the most unhelpful comment you’ll get but it’s food for thought.

But I agree, I expect they’re probably drop shippers and I doubt the book is new. Be interested to purchase it just to see but I’m not willing to blow a grand on a book about religion and politics. I’d rather use my cash as loo roll, frankly. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, these are well known dropshippers
Reporting them will have no effect whatsoever.

I am not sure how this could be classed as a scam, they appear to be well established. My guess is either they do not have stock hence the reason why the price increase. My question is doesn’t price verification software picks up the price difference? 1K for a book it must be bloody good may be used by the pope!!

If it’s the book they say it is, in the condition they claim, it’s not a scam. The person who pays that price is, on the other hand, daft … but that’s a different question…

I’m not quite sure what’s going on with those sellers. The biggest mystery is why they haven’t been flagged for price gouging.
I recently had a CD suppressed for being ‘overpriced’ at £10…after my copy and all the others vanished, serendipity popped up with one on the same ASIN at £1100+, used and new.
This happened with several other books and CDs.

Both of these sellers have been around for quite a while, especially rbm - they are the people behind sellerengine software. I’m not sure if they are dropshippers per se - they seem to be resellers and have a well-known buying department based on an industrial estate in north London.

We can assume both (along with numerous dropshipers) list thousands or millions of titles they don’t physically stock and that by flooding the catalogue they hope to catch a few of the less savvy buyers out there.

As far as I know they are not creating millions of bogus duplicate ASINs in the way that the dodgier dropshippers do, but they are certainly spamming the catalogue with overpriced, presumably phantom, offerings.

Not Anymore, Amazon have New software in place that kicks out what it thinks is over priced items and even if it is the last one in stock, Maximum and Minimum Price does not seem to matter anymore!!

I don’t mean to be rude (but at the same time, be my guest to be offended).

I find this sort of post so insanely annoying that someone would want to get involved in someone else’s business to this extent. Unless this effects you, is illegal or is bringing harm to someone then keep yourself to yourself and stop meddling.

If the O.P has one of these and it’s also in a miraculous condition am I correct in assuming that they’re worried about being under-cut by these villans, fraudsters and general book crims (aka “SCAM SELLERS”) and now will struggle to achieve their own fair price - or just being a busy body?

Who knows?

Define “New”

My definition would be item has never been owned, its gone direct from wholesale to retailer. End of chain. Like new, isn’t new. Its like new. No matter how immaculate its condition, a previously owned book is used.
