ACTION REQUIRED: Updated U.S. Tax Information Required by December 30th, 2024 to avoid account deactivation
Good day all,
I've recently received an email from Amazon, with the following subject line:
ACTION REQUIRED: Updated U.S. Tax Information Required by December 30th, 2024 to avoid account deactivation
This message goes on to say that "IRS regulations require non-US taxpayers to provide Form W-8BEN to Amazon in order to be exempt from US tax reporting requirements".
My question is that I'm not sure why I'm receiving this message when I'm only selling on the Canadian platform (and not the US). I'm only selling on Amazon.ca
Where can I go / what can I do to ensure that I haven't accidently activated some US affiliated feature. I don't sell to any American customers and I don't want, so I'm not sure why I would have to fill out this W-8BEN form.
Can someone please advise.
Thank you,
RemayaCanada.

Amazon is an American company, so it bends to IRS requirements.
The form is fairly simple to fill out via sellercentral -- W-8BEN is for individuals, W-8BEN-E for companies. I last did it in 2023 (amazon asks every 5 or so years). Basically saying you are not an American taxpayer, just a foreigner who can be ignored by the IRS.

As noted in the information provided, we require that you complete this tax interview, based on the answers to the questions this provides us the information you will be providing Amazon the appropriate tax identity information in the form of a Form W-8 or W-9.
I would also recommend reviewing our income tax: FAQ help page for more information:
I am a foreign seller and not a US taxpayer. Do I need to provide any information to Amazon for US tax purposes?
- Yes, even if you are a non-US taxpayer, you still need to provide us information if prompted in order to retain your selling privileges. The responses you give to the tax interview questions will create the appropriate tax form on your behalf.
- IRS regulations require non-US taxpayers to provide Form W-8 to Amazon in order to be exempt from US tax reporting requirements. An IRS Form W-8 expires on December 31, following three years after a seller provides it to Amazon. When prompted, foreign sellers are required to retake the tax interview to submit a new form.
If you are experiencing any issues in completing this tax interview, I would encourage you to create a case and share examples of your situation, I would also ask you post your case ID here so I may also offer guidance on the situation.
The forums community and I are here to support you. Please let us know how we can help you from this point forward.
Emet.
